Naumi Hotel Wellington is the newer, quirkier sibling to Naumi Studio next door. The hotel comprises 62 oversized rooms that feel more like studio apartments. The two share a lobby, restaurant and facilities, so you get the best of both. Rooms and suites are spacious, with eccentricities like patterned headboards and bright feature walls, plus Antipodes bathroom amenities. We’d suggest the Blush King room, which has a huge living space, kitchenette and sweeping views.

It’s on the small side, but the hotel squeezes in an indoor pool and gym, if you need it. It more than makes up for this with other cool spaces – unwind in the Lounge Restaurant and Bar or sip on cocktails at Lola Rouge Bar. Also, check what’s on during your stay, as they host festivals and events that have previously included comedy shows and painting classes.

The Intrepid occupies a beautifully converted 1909 Cadbury Chocolate warehouse on Ghuznee Street, and while they’ve preserved some design aspects, the deep travel theme throughout makes this one fun, modern stay.

Across three floors, there are just 18 rooms, each with exposed brick, Persian rugs and travel-inspired artwork, along with complimentary snacks and drinks, and a huge TV. A little thing we love is the Six for Good toiletries, a sustainable Kiwi brand, and the turndown service complete with pillow chocolates, which is rare to find outside of big-name hotels.

While the focus here is on the rooms, rather than other hotel facilities, they also have Puffing Wine Bar & Shop downstairs, which is a hit with both guests and locals for a lively atmosphere, or just somewhere to pick up a bottle of your favourite New Zealand white to enjoy in your room.

With just ten rooms on Oriental Parade, Ohtel is one of Wellington’s most intimate stays. Every room is individually furnished in an old school, mid-century style with Kiwiana artwork, glass-walled bathrooms with oversized tubs and working record players. We love the attention to detail here, from the locally sourced minibar to the handpicked New Zealand toiletries. If you can, book a Suite for the balcony overlooking Waitangi Park and the large marble bathroom.

There’s no pool, but the hotel sits directly across the road from the beach promenade, and a walk to Te Papa (the national museum) takes about five minutes. You’re also a stone’s throw from the city’s best restaurants, but Ohtel Pantry serves snacks, local beer and wine, and a delicious breakfast for when you’re feeling hungry.

Museum Apartment Hotel adjoins the more well-known QT Wellington, and lucky for anyone staying here, you’ll get access to the QT facilities. This hotel has glitzy, chic interiors that work both for a business stay and for hotel connoisseurs. The apartments range from studios up to two bedrooms, and come with full kitchens, living areas and city or harbour views – the King Harbour View Studio commands sweeping views over the water.

Perched above the Cuba Quarter with views across Te Aro’s rooftops, Mövenpick in Wellington is just as good as its properties around the world, with a few local twists. In a property this size, it’s no surprise there are wellness amenities, and the newly renovated space features a stunning indoor pool with city views and a Jacuzzi, along with a fully equipped gym. When it’s time for food, you have a few options: Two Grey Eatery, for brunch and drinks, GPO for Mediterranean cuisine, and the Lobby Lounge, for drinks that change from coffee to cocktails as the day goes on.

Named after the bootmakers who once filled this laneway, the Cobbler occupies a converted building on Hannah’s Laneway, where Robert Hannah ran his 1920s shoe factory. The design nods to that heritage with moody, industrial design, cosy lighting and modern touches that wouldn’t look out of place in a New York loft.

There are just 12 apartments, but they pack a lot in: kitchenettes and rain showers in the smaller studios, or if you need more space, the Egmont Apartment and The Library apartment feature two Superking beds, a working kitchen, a living room and a breakfast bar.

There’s no pool or gym to keep occupied inside the hotel, but the surrounding laneway is one of Wellington’s best and buzziest for bars and restaurants – some choice recommendations are Mr Go’s, Fortune Favours and the delicious Shelly Bay Bakery.

Quest 256 Lambton opened in 2022 as a purpose-built serviced apartment hotel right on Lambton Quay, Wellington’s main shopping and business strip. The 54 studios and one-bedroom apartments here are compact but smartly designed, each packed with everything you need for a short or extended stay: a fully equipped kitchen, complete with a Nespresso machine and fridge, plus laundry, a dining area, and a smart TV.

As a bonus, they also offer cooked-to-order breakfasts on weekday mornings. Although there is no restaurant or other facilities within the hotel, we can’t fault the location, just steps from the Wellington Cable Car, along with plenty of cafes, shops, and restaurants.
