We review The Montagu Arms Hotel, a romantic hideaway in The New Forest, England
Live out your English countryside dreams.
Live out your English countryside dreams.
It’s hard to believe a 90-minute South Western Railway ride from London can transport travellers a world away from big city noise. The New Forest, Hampshire is a serene haven, where idyllic glades and ancient woodland teem with free-roaming ponies, cattle, and deer, thus creating a classic fairytale scenario no matter where the viewpoint is. As for romance, it’s shaped here in the form of The Montagu Arms, a quaint country house enveloped by English gardens and storied with history. We check in to refuel, reenergize, and reconnect with nature (both rain and shine) at the boutique hideaway.
While this stay was complimentary, all thoughts and opinions are our own
Since the 16th Century, The Montagu Arms has always been an inn of some sort. It began as a meeting place for local farmers and parish officers, and over time hosted Beaulieu fairs, weekly markets, and even timber auctions.
In 1926, it became the hotel we know today, and guests seeking respite from the capital included some of history’s most influential (not to mention, discerning) names. They included Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes; British Actor Henry Irving; Writer, Sir H. Rider Haggard, and former French president, General Charles de Gaulle.
In 1970 it was taken over by the current owners, who have lovingly preserved and elevated the Grade II listed property into one of the most alluring builds of the British countryside.
Both the exterior and interior of the Montagu Arms Hotel ooze English charm in a timeless fashion. There are 33 bedrooms and suites, some located in the main house, some nestled within the Gertrude Jekyll-inspired gardens, all taking influence from the countryside. Original oak flooring, panelling, and old brick fireplaces remain for a touch of that fairytale romance.
Checking into a Courtyard Studio Suite, guests unpack bags to the sound of calm. These rooms are tucked out back, away from the already minimal street sound. Inside, it’s a juxtaposition of modern chic and country vintage. That’s because the courtyard options were launched at the end of 2021, transforming what were the original 1920s chauffeur garages of the hotel.
Plant life is a signature aesthetic. Floor-to-ceiling windows allow garden scenes in and overlapped curtains close with meadow-inspired prints. The high white ceilings evoke a Scandi feel, but under it, a neutrally-toned sitting room is warmed with homely touches. These include shelves of books, perfect when switching off devices; a decanter of site-made gin and treats; and a selection of contemporary and botanical art.
Bathtime was our favourite occasion during this stay, thanks to the large free-standing tubs with an oak caddy to support complimentary tea and Montagu flapjack. Your scented potions come courtesy of The White Company.
Though the weather might not always be on side when out in the English countryside. as it sadly wasn’t for us, the rain can be a surprising welcome. It was our chance to get cosy in front of the 52-inch Smart TV and wrap in a blanket with a brew. A Bluetooth digital radio spins your preferred classics when you want to watch the drops feed plant life outdoors.
Up to two dogs are welcome (for a small surcharge) and they even get a sustainable hamper. If country charm is what you’re after, without compromising modern amenities, Courtyard rooms and suites are the best way to go.
Being in the forest doesn’t mean the fine dining is left in London. The on-site restaurant, The Terrace, has won many accolades for its locally inspired seasonal menu. Organic goodness is brought in from the property’s own garden, across The New Forest, and from the neighbouring coastlines of Hampshire and Dorset. Wood pigeon and venison are just two of the proteins caught wild in the vicinity. Breakfast, lunch, and afternoon tea are also served within this upscale country dining room. And the service always comes with a (genuine) smile.
For a sprinkle of exotic, we recommend moseying over to sister property, Carey’s Manor (there’s a good chance you’ll be going there anyway since that’s where the spa is—detailed below). Zen Garden peddles the finest Thai food in the region. Their kitchen is helmed by Thai chefs, and every sauce is authentic in flavour, albeit milder in spice to cater to the core clientele. Overlooking a bamboo-strewn garden, Zen’ll quietly tantalise tastebuds in a serene Thai spa setting.
As Montagu does not have a spa on the property, all its guests receive complimentary access to SenSpa at Careys Manor, just six miles off campus. SenSpa is a five-star Thai spa with an indoor pool, gym, poolside Jacuzzi, steam room, and sauna. We did not experience treatments, but options on the menu range from traditional Thai massage, algae body wrap, and even a couple’s mud treatment. Slippers were not provided, so we strongly advise bringing your own. You do get robes and towels, though.
