Hospitality is an innate part of Japanese culture, and one of the reasons we love to visit hotels across the country. And when it comes to Tokyo, the choices of where to stay are boundless. We recently visited Grand Hyatt Tokyo in the Roppongi Hills and discovered a big brand offering with a carefully curated heart.

While this stay was complimentary, all thoughts and opinions are our own.

Grand Hyatt Tokyo review

From the moment I stepped through the sweeping entrance of the Grand Hyatt Tokyo, nestled in the heart of Roppongi Hills, I felt an immediate shift—as if I had magically been transported to a place where Tokyo’s electrifying energy and serene luxury coexisted in perfect harmony. Amid the innumerable hotels scattered across Tokyo, I knew this would be no ordinary stay.

When I entered the lobby, I was struck by its effortless elegance. The interplay of rich natural woods, soft ambient lighting, and exquisitely textured fabrics created an atmosphere that was both warm and refined.

The art of rest

The Grand Hyatt Tokyo’s 387 elegantly appointed rooms, including 28 opulent suites, blend the refined essence of Japanese aesthetics with the deep, inviting tones of mahogany, enveloping guests in an atmosphere of warmth and understated luxury. I was lucky enough to experience two different types of rooms during my stay.

When I opened the door to my King Bed, Club Access room on the first night, the city’s pulse faded into a tranquil hush. The expansive floor-to-ceiling windows framed Tokyo’s sprawling skyline, the city’s bustling streets bathed in the bright light of midday, with the sun casting crisp, clear shadows across the room.

The décor was a masterclass in quiet opulence—muted earth tones, and sumptuously soft textures that made the space feel less like a sterile hotel room and more like a private retreat, suspended above the city’s electric heartbeat. And the bed was a cloud of Egyptian cotton and downy perfection, so inviting that slipping between its sheets felt like surrendering to a dream amidst the vibrant hum of the city.

Sleeping with Snorlax: Pokémon dreams and plush surprises

On the second night I was treated to a nostalgic twist wrapped in luxury. As a lifelong Pokémon fan (yes, the kind who still hums the theme song unprompted), I was completely caught off guard when I discovered that the Grand Hyatt Tokyo had unveiled something utterly delightful for the summer: the Pokémon Sleep Suite. Suddenly, my refined, grown-up getaway took an unexpected detour—straight into the heart of my childhood.

Walking into the suite was like stepping through a portal. I was greeted not just by sleek furnishings and plush bedding but by cheerful Pokémon artwork, a gigantic Snorlax plush sprawled like an old friend waiting for a nap, and themed amenities that transformed the space into a dreamlike fusion of whimsy and sophistication.

The surprises didn’t stop there. Even breakfast had been reimagined through the playful lens of the game, proving that luxury could have a lighthearted soul, too. The pancakes arrived stacked like miniature towers, topped with vibrant fruits so artfully arranged they looked like they belonged in a Pokémon Snap frame. And the pièce de résistance? Each pancake was imprinted with an utterly adorable grinning Snorlax face, a small, delightful detail that made me chuckle inwardly—because really, who wouldn’t want their morning meal smiling back at them?

A culinary odyssey

As far as eating goes, Tokyo is a culinary wonderland, where every meal is a journey through flavour and tradition. At the Grand Hyatt Tokyo, this culinary excellence reaches new heights, with world-class dining options that blend international flavours with the very best of Japanese cuisine.

At The Oak Door, I had what might have been the best steak of my life—the Tomahawk was charred to perfection, tender beyond belief, each bite a reminder that great food has the power to transport you. The open kitchen sizzled with energy, the flicker of flames and the rhythmic clatter of knives creating a symphony of anticipation.

The French Kitchen is a charming slice of Paris nestled within the property. Open all day, the restaurant offers everything from leisurely breakfasts and refined lunches to a dinner menu brimming with classic bistro fare. Signature dishes such as Pâté de Campagne, Sole Grenobloise, and Boeuf Bourguignon showcase the timeless elegance of French cuisine.

But it was at Roku Roku where I was truly impressed. Dining here was truly an experience waiting to be unravelled. Here, sushi became poetry, each piece a delicate balance of freshness, craftsmanship, and tradition. With every bite, I could almost imagine the calm dedication of the artisans who had handled these ingredients just hours before. The ceremonial precision of the sushi chef, the almost sacred hush that filled the space, made every moment feel like a meditation for the soul. Needless to say, I walked out not just with a full stomach, but a lingering sense of reverence.

An oasis in the sky: the grand Club Lounge experience

Club Lounge

Each morning, like clockwork, I found myself drawn to the Grand Club Lounge on the 10th floor—my little sanctuary in the sky. The space is a seamless fusion of Japanese aesthetics and contemporary elegance—polished wood accents, delicate ceramic tableware, and curated artwork inspired by traditional Japanese design, including pieces by international artist Sennyo Endou. A striking sculpture at the entrance, crafted from stone sourced from the Tohoku region, bore the imprint of Masatoshi Izumi, the celebrated sculptor and longtime collaborator of Isamu Noguchi, setting a contemplative tone for the experience that lay within.

The lounge, wrapped in soft, golden light, felt like a secret known only to an exclusive coterie. I started my days here with a slow languid breakfast, savouring fresh hot pastries and perfectly brewed coffee as I watched the city stretch awake beneath me. Evenings were just as enchanting, as the day gracefully wound down with delicate canapés on my plate.

A retreat for the body and soul

After long days of wandering through Shibuya’s neon-drenched streets, lingering in bookstores stacked with forgotten stories in Jimbocho, losing myself in hidden alleyways, and, and tracing the quiet beauty of Meiji Shrine, I found respite in the Nagomi Spa and Fitness Center.

Here, time seemed to slow, melting away the tension of the day. The steam curling around me in the spa’s serene onsen-inspired baths, I felt myself realigning, rediscovering a sense of balance. In a city that never stops moving, this was a place where stillness became a luxury of its own.

Final thoughts

As my final morning arrived, I found myself reluctantly lingering, unwilling to leave. Tokyo has a way of etching itself into the soul, and the Grand Hyatt Tokyo had been the heart of my experience for sure; a place where I could feel the city’s pulse, but also its quiet, intimate side.
