1. The Fox & Goose Hotel | Ealing

best affordable hotels London England The Fox & Goose Ealing interior of guestroom
The Fox & Goose Hotel

The Fox & Goose sounds like a cosy country pub, and that’s because it is, in the heart of Wembley. This cosy bolthole is ideal whether you need a London pad or want to stay near the stadium for a gig – inside the hotel are quirky furnishings, a cosy restaurant and original touches that have been retained from the barn-style structure, which used to be an 18th-century coaching house. Rooms are just as comfy as you’d imagine, with fluffy beds equipped with 1600 spring mattresses, ensuite bathrooms and warm lighting.

But it’s the Fuller’s pub on the property that’s the real draw at The Fox & Goose. It’s exactly the kind of spot you’d want to enjoy a hearty roast dinner or pub lunch to warm up from the English weather. They do delicious small plates, such as soup of the day and brie with cranberry, as well as classic mains such as fish and chips and sausage and mash. Despite feeling like it’s in the countryside, the hotel is only 20 minutes by tube to Lancaster Gate, providing the best of both worlds.

2. Dao by Dorsett West London | Hammersmith and Fulham

Dao by Dorsett West London one-bedroom suite
Dao by Dorsett West London

Even closer to the centre of the city in leafy Shepherd’s Bush is Dao by Dorsett. It’s a stone’s throw from Westfield White City and a bus ride from the West End, but its location isn’t the only thing that makes it special. Dramatic architecture, brushed gold, and soft velvet are game-changers in making this affordable hotel feel chic.

Rooms are modern and spacious, designed in apartment style with kitchenettes, living and dining areas, and in somewhere as pricey as London, this is a major win. We particularly love the Dao Studio Terrace, which has a private courtyard (a rarity outside of luxury hotels and great for summer weather!)

The hotel manages to pack in a few different drinking and dining choices, including The Spice Gallery Restaurant, which serves international cuisine all day, and the pretty JIN Bar, which has delicious Asian-inspired dishes and cocktails. Finally, Shikumen is a standout choice, located next door in the lobby of Dorsett Shepherd Bush, which draws crowds for some of London’s finest dim sum and Chinese specialities.

3. Aptel East | Tower Hamlets

best affordable hotels London England Aptel East
Aptel East

Over in East London, Aptel East is sleek, minimalist and has everything you need for a London stay, whether you’re visiting for business, leisure, or even staying a little longer. The hotel is handily located on Commercial Road, close to the city sights but more importantly, some of London’s best restaurants (don’t miss Tayyabs and Spitalfield Market!).

Bright, homely interiors run throughout, into the apartments, which have large bedrooms, kitchens and living rooms and ensuite bathrooms. They also have rooms for any group size, from standard suites up to family and penthouse suites for extra space. While this stay is no frills, they’re self-proclaimed design whizzes and have not only made the hotel sustainable, but have made sure to include all the amenities you’d want most when away from home.

4. Old Ship Inn | Hackney

best affordable hotels London England Old Ship Inn Hackney
Old Ship Inn

In the increasingly trendy neighbourhood of Hackney, you’ll be amongst London’s coolest bars, restaurants and boutiques while staying at The Old Ship Inn, and it’s easy to hop on the Overground into the city. This pub and hotel is a classic pairing of great food and warm hospitality, with just 10 rooms and an excellent menu.

We’d say rooms here are on the smaller side, but they’ve gone the extra mile to make them feel snug, with pastel palettes, colourful pillows and plants, and you can pick from a single, double or deluxe double.

Inside the pub, things couldn’t get more British – stone fireplaces, soft lighting and constant chatter from locals indicate this is a popular spot. Our top tip? If you’re here in summer, they have outdoor seating, perfect for enjoying the London sunshine. American classics are the focus, including loaded fries, chicken wings and a selection of juicy burgers. Plus, they have a fantastic roast each Sunday and always show the latest live sports games, meaning you can roll down from your room, grab a drink and spend the day cosied up indoors.

5. The Z Hotel Holborn | Holborn

best affordable hotels London England Z Hotel Holborn facade of building
Z Hotel Holborn

Z Hotels are a popular, well-known brand, so it’s very hard to go wrong when staying at one of their stylish properties. Their Holborn location is one of the most affordable options you’ll find in the middle of the city, and while space is at a premium inside, they’ve managed to make it sophisticated and fun. Rooms are compact, but have comfortable beds and high-quality linens, ensuite showers and complimentary WiFi.

Given the no frills size, we’d recommend sizing up to a Queen room for a little extra comfort – family rooms are also split across two levels to ensure privacy. There’s no bar, restaurant or other amenities here, but for the price and location, you really won’t need it; the hotel is surrounded by West End shows, London’s best restaurants and bars and endless entertainment options.

6. The Beverley Hotel London – Victoria | Westminster

best affordable hotels London England The Beverley Hotel London Victoria
The Beverley Hotel London – Victoria

Tucked away in Victoria, The Beverley is a boutique stay that couldn’t be more central, close to Victoria coach and train stations, and just a short ride to almost anywhere in London. Located in a picturesque 19th-century Georgian townhouse, the hotel has been artfully designed for maximum space and style.

Rooms, which range from singles up to executive doubles, are cosy but welcoming, with patterned wallpapers, plush grey headboards and floor-to-ceiling windows that, in some rooms, overlook the city, and each has an ensuite bathroom with Elemis toiletries. You’re paying for location here, so don’t expect dining, but the neighbourhood is bursting with food choices and being surrounded by Belgravia mansions, you’ll feel like you’re living the high life here without the price tag.

7. Mama Shelter London – Shoreditch | Tower Hamlets

Mama Shelter Shoreditch bedroom with bed, table and window
Mama Shelter London – Shoreditch

We think you’d be hard pressed to find a more hip, fun hotel in Shoreditch than Mama Shelter, which has embraced a community feel, playful design and plenty of entertainment to create a hotel that you won’t want to leave. The hotel has 194 rooms designed by Dion & Arles, which are compact but super funky – think stripey rugs, quirky lighting and light wood touches. They come in small, medium and large and come with a mini fridge, TV with free movies and organic toiletries.

But the rooms are just a small part of the fun. There’s also a restaurant, garden bar and Japanese-style karaoke rooms, making this the perfect pad to stay at with friends. The restaurant and bar are open all day, serving up classic brunch dishes, burgers and cocktails surrounded by an eclectic mix of furniture or overflowing plants in the Garden Bar. The karaoke rooms are lit by dazzling neon lights and fit up to 15 people – they’re soundproof, so you can sing to your heart’s content, no judgment here.

8. The Lodge Hotel Putney | Wandsworth

best affordable hotels London England The Lodge Hotel Putney interior of guestroom
The Lodge Hotel Putney

Stays on Putney’s tranquil riverside are few and far between, which is why The Lodge Hotel is a real catch. This boutique hotel is refreshingly bright and spacious, while retaining elements such as rustic stone walls from the original building. Even the smallest Cosy Room is up to the standard of a luxury hotel – all 73 rooms blend velvet, brass and colourful patterns, accentuating the space with a feature wall and offering comfy beds, a TV, a minifridge and a Nespresso machine. All rooms have en-suites, but larger ones come with bathtubs. The brand new Superior Suites, which were revealed in May 2025, also have king-sized beds and marble bathrooms with walk-in showers.

The Lodge also features a lovely in-house restaurant, Hide & Seed, which serves modern European cuisine using seasonal ingredients, and a bar with wines, spirits and craft beers, which are best enjoyed on the terrace in warm weather. However, we should mention that it’s only open from 4 pm Monday to Thursday, from 2 pm otherwise and closed on Sunday, but luckily Putney is brimming with riverside pubs to choose from.

9. The Drayton Court Hotel | Ealing

best affordable hotels London England The Drayton Court Hotel exterior facade
The Drayton Court Hotel

This elegant boutique property is located in Ealing, surrounded by quiet, residential neighbourhoods, so you’ll have plenty of peace away from the hustle of Central London. They have just 27 rooms and the winning feature – London’s biggest beer garden, where you’ll find us when the sun comes out.

Every room feels like a countryside cottage stay, with wood panelling, free-standing bathtubs and richly patterned curtains and headboards. There’s no skimping on amenities either, thanks to Egyptian cotton bedding, ensuite bathrooms and fluffy robes.

The pub within Drayton Court is just the spot for an ample breakfast, hearty lunch or drinks while watching a match. The menu is vast, covering everything from pub staples like steak and sausage and mash, to a dedicated pizza menu, Sunday roasts and breakfast. And as mentioned, their pub garden is huge, it’s a vibe during any sporting event and peaceful during the day, plus, they often host comedy nights, quizzes and jazz.

10. Dog & Fox | Wimbledon

We love Wimbledon, and not just for the tennis. This upmarket leafy neighbourhood feels like an escape from London life, while still being in a prime location on the District Line. The Dog & Fox is another sprawling pub and hotel combo in the middle of Wimbledon Village, which dates back to the 1700s.

It has 23 bedrooms, all of which are surprisingly large, whether you opt for the Boutique or the larger Fox, Village and Skylight rooms. Furnishings are traditional and heartwarming, featuring tartan headboards, old-fashioned picture frames and squashy armchairs. The biggest Fox room also has a freestanding bathtub and an honesty bar, but our favourite feature is the colourful stained-glass window in the Skylight room.

The pub itself, aside from having a resident dog (which is the real draw card), also has two sunny terraces, a selection of beers and an ever-rotating menu of seasonal British dishes. They also host fun events such as game butchery masterclasses, and stream live sports – but you’ll need to reserve early in tennis season.

11. St. Paul’s Hotel | Hammersmith and Fulham

best affordable hotels London England St. Paul's Hotel Hammersmith
St. Paul’s Hotel

St. Paul’s Hotel, despite its name, isn’t located anywhere near the City of London; instead, it’s in the handy locale of Hammersmith, not far from the famous Apollo and Kensington Olympia. The property oozes historical charm, with an elaborate exterior that may remind you of a miniature Hogwarts. The hotel was formerly St. Paul’s school, and was also the site of a meeting between Churchill and Eisenhower to plan the D-Day landings, so there’s no shortage of fascinating tales to be found.

The rooms are richly decorated with gold and grey finishes, each with plush beds, armchairs and ensuite bathrooms, and some featuring original fireplaces. Also on the property is Melody Restaurant, named for the 1971 movie that was filmed here. It’s a true white tablecloth affair, where seasonal ingredients are front and centre, so whether you enjoy a light breakfast here or a sumptuous dinner, you’ll feel truly spoiled throughout your stay.

They’ve gone to town with heritage charm, particularly in the rooms, which all have suites and are decked out in old-world patterned drapes and cushions, gilded frames and patterned walls. Each also comes with a television, WiFi and a fully stocked minibar.

14. The Corner London City | Tower Hamlets

The Corner is one of our favourite affordable London hotels for a number of reasons. Number one, it’s super sustainable, self-proclaimed as London’s greenest hotel, they use efficient lighting, solar panels, water-saving showers and repurposed furniture to retain this accolade.

And being green is far from boring, as The Corner proves with its quirky interiors that are full-on maximalist. Expect floor-to-ceiling murals, neon colours and modern lighting throughout the rooms, which span Snug, Comfy and Plush. Plush is our pick, featuring an ensuite bathroom with a rain shower, Bee Kind toiletries and a bed made comfier by the organic mattress.

The hotel restaurant serves up three meals a day, afternoon tea and cocktails, and in keeping with the green theme, it’s both vegan and sustainably sourced. Should plant-based not be your bag, you’re around the corner from buzzing Brick Lane and London’s East End, where endless restaurants will be at your fingertips.
