2. 137 Pillar Suites and Residences

137 Pillar Suites and Residences
137 Pillar Suites and Residences

137 Pillars has its origins in Chiang Mai, where the owners first converted a traditional 1800s teakwood Thai commercial property into a stunning resort. Their venture in Bangkok, though, while continuing to have a philosophy inspired by Thai culture, has a contemporary façade and outlook.

Centrally located in the Soi Sukhumvit neighbourhood, 137 Suites and Residences redefines the concept of living, placing it among the best boutique hotels in Bangkok. Chic spaces with traditional touches give the rooms an attractive personality. An almost excessive use of silk, mood lighting, walk-in cupboards, individual wine cellars, butler service, and floor-to-ceiling windows are amenities that give the suites an unmatched edge over similar options across the city.

We particularly love the rooftop infinity pool here, the perfect place to sip a cocktail while appreciating panoramic views of Bangkok. And when feeling peckish after a good swim, head down to the hotel’s restaurant, Trading Post Bar & Bistro. Boasting Instagram-worthy interiors where marble and metal amalgamate harmoniously, it’s one of the hippest places in town for a laidback brunch.

4. The Siam

The Siam
The Siam

Staying next to the river in the heart of Bangkok has a magical appeal that is almost impossible to replicate. Helping visitors live out this travel fantasy is The Siam. Occupying a three-acre spot next to the Chao Phraya River, The Siam has an alluringly regal grandeur brought about by its open spaces, be it the lobby, the rooms, spa, or dining options. The richness of the building and its interiors continues with its Art Deco features and colour tones that include shades of white, black, and purple.

The rooms at The Siam shout out controlled indulgence. You feel pampered without the décor being gaudy. That doesn’t mean the hotel is without its peculiarities. On the one hand, you’ll find Italian bathtubs and oversized king beds in your abode. On the other, the room décor can include anything from vintage photographs to life-sized bicycles clamped to the walls.

The Siam offers its guests a chance to stay in well-appointed suites or pool villas. But we can’t get enough of Connie’s Cottage, the cutest little escape in Bangkok for a couple. A traditional teak house with a pool, reminiscent of Bangkok’s bygone era, Connie’s Cottage is in a world of its own and a must-stay for honeymooners desiring privacy.

7. Maduzi Bangkok

Maduzi Bangkok
Maduzi Bangkok

Maduzi has much going for it. Spread over seven floors and having 40 rooms, the hotel is spacious yet not intimate enough to limit its customers base to only couples. Its revered central location in Sukhumvit makes it a convenient place to stay. Furthermore, the hotel beautifully merges Thai heritage and Bangkok’s multiculturalism, fashioning spaces that stand out for their composition and originality. The rooms carry forward the same attitude, albeit with top-of-the-line facilities like 42” TVs, Bose sound systems, complimentary mini bar, espresso machines, and free WiFi.

No wonder Maduzi has many returning customers who prefer the hotel over thousands of others that dot the city. Or maybe it is the fact that breakfast service at the Maduzi goes on till 2:00 PM, a convenience almost unheard of in the hospitality world.

9. Public House Hotel

Public House Hotel interior of guest room
Public House Hotel

Hip to a fault, owner Paul Sachdev’s Public House Hotel in Bangkok’s Sukhumvit area is among the new breed of boutique hotels, where comfort and designer beauty converge through thoughtful curation. Offering chic living arrangements conceptualised by PHI Interior, the rooms and common spaces here take inspiration from the 60s and 70s giving the ambience a colourful character through abstract and lush floral prints and wall art.

The abodes, ranging from deluxe accommodations to one-bedroom suites and corner rooms, take on a more classic look. Wooden flooring, industrial lighting accents, floor-to-ceiling windows, and vintage-style furniture make them cosy. At the same time, 65″ Smart TVs, Nespresso machines, free WiFi, table speakers, en-suites with showers, and air conditioning add to the luxe quotient.

The common spaces at Public House come as a pleasant surprise. Fest is the hotel’s always buzzing ground floor restaurant, while The Mooon impresses with its rooftop, poolside location and 80s vibe. Cocktail enthusiasts need to stop by the Open Bar for a lesson in mixology. Should creative juices flow in the meantime, the hotel also has Forum, a co-working space, and the intimately relaxed Podcast Lounge.

10. The Mustang Nero Hotel

The Mustang Nero Hotel
The Mustang Nero Hotel

Owned by local Ananda Chalardcharoen, Mustang Nero is by far one of the quirkiest boutique hotels in Bangkok. Fashionably hip and a reflection of the owner’s passion for the eccentric, the 10-room accommodation has a broodingly dark disposition that is both alluring and imaginative.

Set inside an old commercial building, the taxidermy and oddity-filled lobby with original features set the mood of your stay the moment one enters the hotel.

The rooms follow suit with equally eclectic interiors ranging from retro to industrial to classy-chic. Surprisingly, everything works, giving Mustang Nero a distinct identity. Included in the room rates are complimentary breakfast and WiFi. We particularly cherish the guidebook curated by Ananda, featuring local hidden gems, that every guest receives upon arrival.

13. Volve Hotel Bangkok

Volve Hotel Bangkok interior of suite
Volve Hotel Bangkok

Bold yet delicate, in vogue yet proudly traditional, Volve Hotel Bangkok is a labour of love that depicts Thai cultural attitude in a contemporary incarnation. Influenced by the old houses of Sukhumvit, the owner, along with designer Mr Pitiphat Chongsomchit of Private Scale, have worked meticulously to develop a beautiful residence where attention to detail is commendable. Further adding prestige and vitality to the decor and facilities are digital prints by Nakrob Moonmanas and Thomthong Chaijinda, bathroom amenities by Malin+Goetz, and the use of brass and terrazzo in various interior elements.

The 28 rooms and suites at Volve Hotel radiate sheer sophistication with a dash of eccentricity. Marble print sofas and chairs, large light fixtures, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city stand out amongst restrained wooden and dark colour schemes. USB charging points, high-speed WiFi, wall-mounted TVs, and rain showers are standard across all room categories.

A compact hotel with a cosy atmosphere, Volve’s lobby acts as its hub. A great place to lounge and meet fellow residents, it also comprises a cafe where you can enjoy freshly prepared breakfast or a daytime snack.

Ad Lib Bangkok
Ad Lib Bangkok

A stay at the Ad Lib Bangkok is about being a part of the city and having the option of stepping away from its restless nature. Hidden in an enclosed side alley, the hotel’s compact façade can be a little deceptive. While its glass-walled lobby is bright and cozy, Ad Lib spreads out across three wings with 58 rooms promising homey comforts and services.

The guestrooms at Ad Lib boast modern-day design aesthetics. They flawlessly use elements like copper, wood, leather, and Belgian linen to create spaces that entice guests to spend more time indoors. Clean, comfortable, and fashionable, Homitel is one of the newer budget-friendly boutique hotels in Bangkok. Owner Jutika Krongmongkolkul’s first foray into the hospitality business, Homitel furnishes home-like comforts in a professionally-managed hotel setting.

Located close to the MRT Huai Khwang station, Homitel is an excellent base for exploring some of Bangkok’s famous attractions, such as the Chatuchak Weekend Market. The hotel’s 30 rooms and serviced apartments are less traditional and more new-age in design. Trendy and functional furniture, sliding barn doors leading to en-suite bathrooms, and modish fixtures give the rooms a stylish look.

We, though, simply adored finding hints of tradition emerge across the hotel now and then, primarily through the use of bespoke Thai fabrics.

Capella Bangkok

Snuggly located at the junction of old and new Bangkok, Capella is an expansive river-facing property that labels itself an “urban resort.” Next to the Chao Phraya River, it comprises 78 rooms, 16 suites, and our favourites, seven villas with plunge pools near the flowing water. Placing Capella among the best boutique hotels in Bangkok are its rooms. The pet-friendly abodes have floor-to-ceiling windows, balconies, and marble bathrooms, in addition to contemporary amenities avid travellers now expect from hotels of this caliber. The villas, in contrast, have a private garden, sala for two, a jacuzzi, and separate living and dining spaces.
