Sleeper trains are all the rage in Europe where the network is fast, reliable, and for the most part, comfortable. UK residents may already be familiar with The Caledonian Sleeper. Among the world’s most reputable train services, it hauls carriages overnight between London and major destinations in Scotland, including Edinburgh. The entry-level option offers well-sized coach seats, but really, it’s all about the cabins. They’re like a mini hotel room on rail tracks, with room service, ensuite bathrooms, Wi-Fi, and a choice between bunk beds and double beds. Here’s what they look like inside:

The beds

Handcrafted Glencraft mattresses have been used by four generations of the British Royal family and many five-star hotels, so you’ll have a sleep no airplane can compete with. Soft bedding and two pillows a person allow guests to really sink deep into bedtime bliss.

Bedside tech

Think compact yet five-star modern hotel tech. Beside each bed are USB chargers, holding trays for your devices, and enough space to slot in a bottle of water. There are also light controls so you can stay up to read while your bunkmate turns in for the night.

Room configuration

With moving accommodations space is limited. The Caledonian makes the most of every square inch, such as this club twin with wall-to-wall bunk beds, a sink area, and a bathroom. Everything folds neatly into place, and luggage can be stored underneath the bed.

Amenities

Guests are presented with a complimentary sleep kit featuring an eye mask, ear plugs, and a bar of Mackie’s chocolate. Bath products including the soap come from ARRAN. Both of which are Scottish brands. Helpful staff are on hand to cater to specific requests and queries throughout the journey.

Food and drink

Breakfast and lounge access are included with the club and en-suite rooms. It’s served in the Club Car, designed by renowned Edinburgh-based designer Ian Smith, where guests can dine on delights that showcase fresh Scottish produce. The haggis is a must-try. Breakfast can also be ordered to the cabins.
