Canggu hums with a unique energy. Its streets are a lively mix of yoga studios, bustling cafes, boutique hotels, independent boutiques, and beachside hangouts, drawing a vibrant community from all corners of the globe. Yet, even amidst its rapid evolution, Canggu manages to hold onto its charm, with lush rice fields and quieter pockets waiting to be discovered. Desa Hay embodies this balance—offering a peaceful retreat that feels connected to both Bali’s natural beauty and the neighbourhood’s dynamic spirit.

While this stay was complimentary, all thoughts and opinions are our own.

We review Desa Hay in Canggu, Bali

An arrival into tranquillity

The pace of life slows as I step through Desa Hay’s grand wooden doors. Ahead, a lagoon-like pool shimmers in the sunlight, flanked by inviting daybeds and swaying palms. The gentle sound of water mingles with the rustling breeze, creating an atmosphere of calm and stillness.

The warm welcome from the staff sets the tone for the stay, and I’m quickly added to a WhatsApp group—a thoughtful touch that ensures seamless communication. From coordinating breakfasts to arranging activities, the group chat becomes a modern lifeline for personalised service. As I’m shown to my room, it feels like each step into the property takes me further into a private Eden.

A private enclave

At the heart of Desa Hay lies the Jabu (villa), inspired by the traditional homes of Indonesia’s Batak Toba people. With its striking triangular roofline and timeless charm, my Garden Jabu with Plunge Pool is both a homage to heritage and a showcase of thoughtful design. Surrounded by lush gardens and fronted by a private plunge pool, the space feels deeply integrated with its natural surroundings.

Inside, I find a perfect balance of rustic and modern touches. The king-size bed takes centre stage beneath a straw-panelled roof, flanked by hanging Nordic-style LED lamps. Light wood accents contrast beautifully with the dark walls, creating an ambiance that feels both cozy and refined. Bay windows on two sides blur the line between indoors and outdoors, allowing the tropical landscape to become part of the room’s aesthetic.

For a bibliophile like me, the reading nook tucked into the air-conditioned interior is a tempting retreat. Still, the patio beckons with its whimsical hanging bird-nest chair—a perfect spot to lose myself in a novel, surrounded by the gentle hum of nature.

A stylish bathroom awaits

Behind sliding doors adorned with intricate leaf carvings, the bathroom unveils understated luxury. Twin stone sinks framed by light wood cabinetry add a tactile sense of indulgence, while a rain shower opens to an outdoor standalone bathtub nestled amid lush foliage. As a tropical storm rolls in, I soak in a bubble bath, listening to raindrops patter on the leaves and watching the surrounding greenery come alive.

Back inside, I discover a beautiful wooden bar in my Jabu, stocked with everything needed for a perfect drink: Negroni, vodka, whiskey, gin, and a variety of mixers. Yet the rain calls for something warm, and I find comfort in a freshly brewed masala chai, its spices offering a cosy antidote to the storm outside.

Floating mornings and culinary highlights

Start the day with a floating tray of delicacies

Desa Hay’s restaurant, IJO, serves excellent lunch and dinner, but the highlight of my culinary experience is the floating breakfast. Each morning, it’s delivered straight to my plunge pool at a time of my choosing. A tray brimming with warm croissants, avocado toast with poached eggs, banana protein pancakes, and an acai bowl floats beside me as I bask in the morning light. (To clarify, this feast is for two—I do have my limits!) Savouring each bite while soaking in the pool is truly a pinch-me moment.

Thoughtful hospitality

The service at Desa Hay is attentive yet effortless. The WhatsApp group proves invaluable, from scheduling breakfast and yoga sessions to arranging a seat at Happy Hour. Every request is met with warmth and efficiency, ensuring my time here flows smoothly.

One unique offering is the turn-down service between 5-8pm, which refreshes the room with replaced amenities, smoothed bedsheets, and a tidied-up space. It’s a small touch but one that contributes to an unusually restful night. Coupled with blackout curtains and perfectly plush pillows, it’s no wonder I find myself experiencing some of the best sleep I’ve had in months.

Exploring Bali

Bali is my go-to destination for three things: yoga, food, and recovery. Desa Hay’s location makes it an excellent base for all three.

For yoga, Vivienne Zeng is in a league of her own. Her classes focus on strength and mindfulness, helping yogis of all levels achieve what they didn’t think possible. Her teacher trainings at The Tapas Yoga School are regarded as top-tier for good reason—she offers a transformative approach that is truly unique. Find her at Samadi Studio and other select venues.

When it comes to dining, Bali never disappoints, but one newcomer has captured my heart. Located in Berawa, Longtime combines mid-century and modern design with unforgettable Asian flavors. The setting is as memorable as the food—a true dining experience that lingers in my mind long after the meal is over.

For recovery, Nirvana is a wellness haven. This expansive space includes an open gym, co-working area, lounge, restaurant, and pool, but the real draw is its recovery zone. Here, you’ll find Jacuzzis, 4- and 8-degree ice baths, a sauna, and a steam room. It’s a place where you can easily lose a day, cycling between activity and relaxation.

Final thoughts

Desa Hay offers a rare blend of tranquillity and thoughtful design, making it a sanctuary amid Bali’s ever-changing landscape. From the elegant Jabus to the personalised service and the serene plunge pool breakfasts, every detail encourages rest and rejuvenation. It’s a place where tradition meets modernity, creating a haven I’m already planning to revisit.
