We review METT Singapore and discover a sleek new take on urban luxury housed in a heritage building

Amid Singapore’s big-name properties and boisterous boutique hotels, a new opening is quietly, effortlessly breathing new life into the city’s crowded hospitality scene. We checked into the recently opened METT Singapore to find a heritage-infused stay tucked into leafy surrounds.

The history

Few hotels in Singapore have as much history infused into their bones as METT Singapore. After careful renovations, the former Hotel Fort Canning has reopened as METT ’s first Southeast Asian outpost, perfectly balancing colonial charm with modern sensibilities.

The building itself was constructed in 1926 as an administration office for the British Far East Command. Appropriately, it’s tucked into the verdant Fort Canning Park, by the site where Sir Stamford Raffles was based and where Lieutenant-General Arthur Percival made the fateful decision to surrender Singapore to the Japanese in 1942.

Even before stepping into the property, its original architecture makes itself known in graceful lines, a collonaded façade, and old windows, lovingly restored, that were part of the building’s original iteration.

Inside, the design is a contemporary spin on Singapore’s famous black-and-white architecture, with a grand staircase of plush carpets and airy cross-beamed balustrades. The lobby offers a preview of what’s to come with a flooring that alternates between marble and parquet and plenty of potted plants to reflect the greenery of the park outside.

Its position within Fort Canning Park means the hotel is situated in a quiet enclave. However, while it’s physically not far from Orchard Road and Singapore’s CBD, it can be a little tricky to get to, requiring either a long walk from the nearest MRT or a car ride to the door.

Colonial comfort

There are 84 rooms here, each created in the same charming style as the rest of the hotel. We stayed in the residential-inspired Park View Suite, which features a colour palette of soft washes of greys, whites, lilac and blues, designed to relax and complement the flooding of natural light and nature outside. The eagle-eyed will notice another inspired touch: the bespoke blinds feature a foliage design that reflects the park’s greenery.

In the generous living area, modernity is expressed in the marble flooring, six-seater round table, and sitting area with plenty of plush seating rendered in soft grey textiles; colonial heritage can be seen in the double-layered windows (the outer layer is composed of the afore-mentioned original relics), plantation-style shutters, and old-world-inspired wood-and-granite cabinet that houses a well-stocked minibar.

A similar design ethos permeates the serene bedroom and bathroom. Premium linens and goose-down bedding on the king-sized bed make for a great night’s sleep; the walk-in wardrobe and separate cabinets and vanity make getting dressed a pleasure; while the marble-clad bathroom, with its sprawling double vanity, period-appropriate rolltop bath, and separate rainforest shower, elevate morning and evening rituals.

The history geek in me delights in one particular feature: one side of the suite faces Battlebox, the site of the afore-mentioned surrender of Singapore, which is now a tourist attraction.

Food and drinks

The culinary highlight of our stay was dinner at L’amo Bistro del Mare, which brings a taste of the Italian Riviera to Singapore. From start to finish, it was a symphony of fresh Mediterranean flavours in dishes like Frittura di mare, Burrata with heirloom tomatoes, a decadent Tagliolini al tartufo di stagione pasta, and—of course—a sinfully rich Tiramisu, prepared tableside with much pomp and circumstance.

Tucked behind the hotel’s central staircase is Canning Bar & Lounge, the main social space. By morning, there are semi-buffet breakfasts, featuring yoghurts, fruit, charcuterie, and made-to-order eggs, which are the perfect pick-me-up after a morning workout at the hotel’s gym.

In the evening, though, there are well-crafted cocktails that draw inspiration from the area’s history—the martini-style Olive III (named for a locally wartime signal code used in WW2) is appropriately punchy—alongside a dining menu inspired by local flavours or the Mediterranean—the Our Laksa is a refined take on the classic Singaporean favourite.

Is there more?

METT Singapore will host the soon-to-open Madison House, a brand new private members club with a focus on wellness and community. Details are yet to be revealed, but right now, guests can access the club’s high-performance gym, with literally every Technogym product you could need, from squat racks and treadmills to abductor machines and smith machines. I might go as far as to say this might just be my favourite hotel gym ever.

There are also two outdoor pools: a large family-friendly one fringed by sunloungers, and a smaller, quieter one featuring airy cabanas. The property also has padel courts.

Madison House, and METT Singapore, will also be home to Asia’s first outpost of The Longevity Suite, Europe’s most advanced biohacking and anti-ageing clinic. I slipped into their showroom suite for an hour to enjoy some of their signature treatments. Between the cryotherapy chamber, cutting-edge hyperbaric oxygen pod, and rare dry float table, I felt completely recharged and rejuvenated, and had a fantastic night’s sleep. It’s a good sign of what’s to come when the clinic officially opens.
