We review The Beaumont Hotel, London and discover a bathroom of dreams, a gem of a spa, and exquisite new design details
A right royal stay in the heart of Mayfair.
A right royal stay in the heart of Mayfair.
We are suckers for uncovering hidden hotel gems around the globe from Mexico to Thailand. And it goes without saying, that properties across the United Kingdom constantly dazzle us with their unique design, coloured history, and eccentric touches. Tucked away in a genteel corner of London’s Mayfair, The Beaumont Hotel is certainly one of the hotel set’s best-kept secrets. In the interest of transparency, we’d like to mention here that while this stay was gifted by the hotel, all the thoughts and opinions are our own.
While this stay was complimentary, all thoughts and opinions are our own.
Fresh off a renovation by Thierry Despont, I was immediately transported into a different era when I entered The Beaumont. Think: private club old-world charm blended with chic Art Deco touches throughout, with the lobby, corridors, restaurants and rooms filled with a fascinating mixture of artwork and antiques.
Set beside Brown Hart Gardens, there’s a tranquillity that belies The Beaumont’s central location. It’s a stone’s throw away from Oxford Street, world-renowned galleries, and Hyde Park. If shopping and sightseeing is on your agenda, you couldn’t find a better base from which to plan your time in the capital.
Big perk: The hotel offers a complimentary chauffeur-driven house car to ferry guests around town which I had pre-booked and we arrived in style to watch Frozen the musical!
The Beaumont embodies the spirit of the grand hotels of 1920s London and New York – yet on an intimate scale, with just 50 rooms and 22 suites, including Sir Antony Gormley’s ROOM, an inhabitable work of public art and The Roosevelt Suite – a presidential suite of up to five bedrooms with a private terrace.
I checked into a sprawling 60sq-m Classic Suite which boasted a king-sized bed dressed in the softest white sheets, a separate entertaining area complete with plush sofas, a dining area, a spacious desk, and guest bathroom. This suite is ideal for families. The staff had set up two beds in the living area for my children who were delighted to find mini robes, slippers, Beaumont teddies, and activity books to keep them entertained.
Little touches of luxury can be found everywhere, from the art-covered walls, The Beaumont-branded playing cards on the table, to the bespoke single-origin chocolate embossed with an image of the hotel left at turndown service. Everything apart from alcohol in the mini bar is complimentary.
My favourite part though? The marble bathroom was a dream, with a sumptuous deep-soak tub complete with waterproof TV, a well-stocked double vanity boasting a range of eco-friendly D. R. Harris amenities, a separate walk-in shower, as well as heated mosaic floors. Like I said, a dream bathroom!
The hotel’s sleek Art Deco interiors have been recently refreshed by superstar designer Thierry Despont: the iconic Le Magritte Bar serves classic cocktails and stylish snacks, while the new Gatsby’s Room (main image) is the perfect spot for afternoon tea or evening drinks. At the core of The Beaumont is The Colony Grill, a starry, sophisticated New York-style restaurant with a timeless menu of transatlantic favourites, and a big helping of old-world glamour. Outside, the brand new Terrace has added a spot of café culture to Brown Hart Gardens.
Harper’s Bazaar has named it “The Best London Spa for unwinding in style”, and the spa here really is a little gem. Inspired by the Turkish baths at the iconic Royal Automobile Club private members’ club in London, The Beaumont Spa is a calm oasis decked out in white marble complete with a steam room, sauna, cold plunge pool and hammam. Book The Beaumont Hammam Experience [120 mins, £190] for a really luxurious scrub-down.
The attention to detail and the elevated service levels is what really sets this hotel apart. You are greeted by name upon arrival by warm, friendly and impeccably dressed staff. Remember when I said we went to see Frozen the musical? The staff took note of this and upon our return to our room, the children were greeted with a Frozen-themed treasure hunt. Led by the seasoned hotelier, Duncan Palmer, they certainly know how to pack in many ‘wow’ moments during a stay and that’s what keeps guests coming back again and again.
