Myanmar has fast-become a trending travel destination thanks to the unique culture, stunning architecture and the natural wonders of the country, and now design lovers have the perfect place to stay with the opening of Rosewood Yangon. Finding its home in a colonial era former court building, this new hotel highlights local artists, produce and more.
Housed in the former New Law Courts built in 1927, Rosewood Yangon can be found near the historic centre of the city nestled amid other heritage buildings. Featuring highlights such as a dramatic row of original three-story-high colonnades and 1920s chandeliers, a conservation management plan ensured that the transformation maintained the architectural integrity of the building.
New York-based firm Lillian Wu Studio was the interior design team charged with guestrooms and spas, while Tokyo’s Bond Design Studio created the design for the restaurants and lounges. The group efforts in the considered transformation have led to the receiving of the 31st Yangon Heritage Trust Blue Plaque to mark the building’s cultural significance.
The design for the hotel’s 205 rooms and suites highlight the original architecture of the building, offering high ceilings and plenty of natural light. Most of the rooms feature patios or balconies with views available of the city or the landscaped internal courtyards.
Lacquerware and papier-mâché objets d’art created in Bagan have been incorporated into the rooms, along with handwoven throws and cushions by artisans from non-profit Turquoise Mountain. Abstract paintings by local artist Nyein Chan Su and stylised portraits of young Myanmar women wearing traditional thanaka paste by Pyayt Phyo Aung have been used throughout.

With five dining venues onsite, each possesses its own distinctive sense of character, from NOVA European Brasserie with its open kitchen to CourtRoom Bar with its heritage decor and restored dark teak panelling.
Scheduled to open this spring, Y Bar will take its place on the roof of the hotel, the only luxe bar in the city to offer a panoramic view of the Yangon River. A chinese restaurant is also slated to open in late 2020 offering Cantonese and regional Chinese fare in a contemporary setting.
An infinity pool can be found on the rooftop level of Rosewood Yangon and a 24-hour fitness studio with state-of-the-art equipment is available for those looking to get their workout in.
Slated to open in late 2020, Sense, A Rosewood Spa will offer guests a welcome retreat from the city. Traditional Burmese practices will be paired with natural ingredients that are thoughtfully sourced for the ultimate in self-care.
