Drawing inspiration from the renowned port wine heritage of Porto, The Yeatman Hotel pays homage to the art of winemaking and viticulture. Its architecture evokes the grandeur of a traditional wine cellar, with terraced levels cascading down the hillside, offering panoramic vistas of the picturesque cityscape and the tranquil waters of the Douro River below.

The location is a haven for people seeking a harmonious blend of sophistication and comfort. Each intricately designed room and suite reflects the unique character of Portugal’s diverse wine regions, adorned with tasteful details that echo the hues and textures of vineyards in bloom. Impeccable attention to detail, from the luxurious furnishings to the carefully curated artwork, creates an ambience of refinement.

Each of the 109 classically designed rooms offers guests a balcony or a secluded terrace, providing sweeping vistas of the city’s enchanting landscape. I was treated to a breathtaking panorama of the Douro River, its serpentine waters weaving through the heart of the bustling urban tapestry, reflecting the sun’s gentle caress during the day and the city’s twinkling lights at night.

My large and airy marble bathroom featured premium amenities with a deep soaking tub and double showers. Together, these features created a sanctuary within a sanctuary, an oasis of comfort where I could retreat to blissful seclusion after a long day in the city.

Food and drink

A true epicurean paradise, The Yeatman Hotel boasts an exceptional dining experience that tantalises all the senses. The Yeatman Gastronomic Restaurant, awarded two Michelin stars, invites guests on a culinary journey through the flavours of Portugal, accompanied by an extensive selection of wines. As the sun sets over the river, the terrace transforms into a magical space where guests can savour exquisite dishes in a little slice of paradise.

Named after the esteemed port wine maker and ambassador, Dick Yeatman, Dick’s Bar and Bistro exudes an atmosphere of refined charm and conviviality. The bistro’s offerings include a delightful array of appetisers such as soft shell crab mantou, ceviche, and chocolate banana pie. I found myself particularly captivated by the city vistas, while savouring a cocktail and indulging in the tasty small bites.

Indulgence extends beyond the rooms of the hotel. The Vinothérapie Spa by Caudalie offered me a sanctuary of relaxation and rejuvenation, drawing inspiration from the antioxidant-rich properties of grapes. Here, ancient wine-based treatments and modern wellness techniques merge for moments of pure bliss. Following a rejuvenating massage, an invitation was extended for me to luxuriate in the serenity of the onsite Roman baths and the Turkish steam room.

The neighbourhood

Tucked away in the lively cultural epicentre of Porto, this enchanting district unfolds as a trove of delightful attractions that I had the pleasure of exploring. Leading the pack is the remarkable WOW (World of Wines), a captivating cultural haven that sets the tone for an unforgettable experience.

Tucked within the historic wine cellars of WOW is the renowned Mira Mira by Ricardo Costa, a rooftop fine dining restaurant masterminded by the talented executive chef at the two Michelin star restaurant at The Yeatman.

Here, I was treated to a sumptuous gastronomic journey celebrating the rich tapestry of Portuguese cuisine, meticulously crafted with seasonal ingredients and a meticulous eye for detail. I delighted in the exquisite flavours of the specially crafted menu, savouring delicacies like the Crayfish Tartar.

As I delved into the rich legacy of Portugal’s cork production at Planet Cork, I couldn’t help but marvel at the intricate craftsmanship, a testament to the country’s deep-rooted traditions. Satisfying my sweet tooth at The Chocolate Story was a true delight, as I traced Portugal’s historical significance in the world of cacao and chocolate.

Additionally, The Atkinson Museum appealed with its showcase of “The Dynamic Eye: Beyond Optical and Kinetic Art” from the illustrious Tate Collection. Featuring an extensive display of over 100 artworks by 63 international artists, the exhibition was a testament to the neighbourhood’s commitment to bringing world-class cultural experiences to its visitors.
