Who doesn’t love exploring Japan? And while it may be known for its ski resorts and stunning temples, we are huge fans of delightful Okinawa, the Japanese island that blends the nation’s famed efficiency with iconic beaches and seas of unreal blue hues. So when we recently had the opportunity to visit Grand Mercure Okinawa Cape Zanpa Resort, we jumped at the chance.

While this stay was complimentary, all thoughts and opinions are our own.

Grand Mercure Okinawa Cape Zanpa Resort review

A place that feels like an ethereal dream stitched together from sea breezes, golden sunsets, and the kind of hospitality that makes you compelled to shift in permanently. That’s the essence of Grand Mercure Okinawa Cape Zanpa Resort. For two nights, I surrendered to a slower rhythm, letting the rhythm of the waves dictate the pace of my days— which, spoiler alert, consisted mostly of idyllic, blissful nothingness.

First impressions

Nestled on the west coast of Okinawa’s main island, a 70-minute drive from Naha Airport, Grand Mercure Okinawa Cape Zanpa Resort perches near Cape Zanpa, a ruggedly gorgeous headland boasting spectacular views of the East China Sea.

Stepping into the lobby, I was met with a space that exuded calm—high ceilings, natural wood accents, and the soft scent of sea salt in the air. And just like the Okinawan greeting—chimugukuru, the spirit of sincerity—it wraps around you like a warm sea breeze. It’s not just a catchphrase; you feel it in every interaction, from the warm smiles at reception to the uncanny way the staff seem to know what you need before you do. Psychic abilities? Exceptional hospitality? Either way, I wasn’t complaining.

The rooms: a window to serenity

My room was a spacious sanctuary, over 36 sq-m of pure tranquility. As I pulled back the curtains, the panoramic view stretched infinitely—an expanse of deep blue sea kissing the horizon, sky streaked with pastel hues at dusk.

Every detail felt intentionally placed to invite ease—warm, ambient lighting, a sumptuously plush sofa, and a tea set waiting for the perfect afternoon pause. It was a space that made me feel instantly at home.

A water wonderland

The pools here are anything but ordinary. As one of the largest in Okinawa, this aquatic playground is a labyrinth of delights—a lazy river for drifting, water slides for thrill-seekers, and the serene Yukuru Pool, an adults-only haven where time slows to a blissful standstill.

If you, like me, find that the best epiphanies come while floating under the sun, this is your spot. And no need to worry about the seasons—the pools are heated in the winter, so your aquatic escape is a year-round affair. For families, a dedicated toddler-friendly area ensures that every guest, big or small, gets their perfect dose of waterborne fun.

From breakfast bliss to nifty nightcaps

A meal of local delights

Even if you’re not a morning person (trust me, I’m not), the breakfast buffet here is worth setting an alarm for. The selections are extensive. Picture this: fluffy omelettes cooked to order, fresh sashimi, Okinawan specialties, and pastries that crumble just right. With a mix of Japanese and Western options, every morning was a mini choose-your-own-adventure in gastronomy. What I really looked forward to was the mini pancake-making machine—an unassuming contraption that, despite its modest size, commanded the longest queue in the room.

Dinner was equally exciting. A feast for both the eyes and the taste buds. The buffet spotlighted the best of local flavors, from crispy fried chicken and Okinawan-style spam to monakazushi, a delightful twist on sushi wrapped in delicate monaka wafers. But the real showstopper? The choux pastries. These golden, airy puffs were light as clouds on the outside, yet bursting with rich, velvety cream within. It was a battle of sheer willpower not to go back for a second…or third.

Post-dinner, the lobby lounge buzzed with a mellow kind of energy, with conversations flowing as smoothly as the drinks. From 9-11pm, the Night Cap session offeres a curated selection of whiskey, shochu, and brandy, drawing a steady crowd of night owls and quiet contemplators alike. So if cradling a fine drink, while letting the night unravel at its own unhurried pace is your thing, then you’ll feel right at home here.

A soak with a view

There’s an almost cinematic poetry to sinking into a warm bath while the sea stretches endlessly before you—like a moment stolen from a film, where you’re the main character in peak relaxation mode. The observation bath, outdoor rock bath, and sauna became my personal sanctuaries after a long day of adventure.

Depending on the time of day, you can soak beneath the golden glow of a sunset or let the moonlit ocean be your backdrop. Either way, the therapeutic waters certainly induced extreme contentment in me and a strong reluctance to leave. Of all the resort’s offerings, this was my personal favourite.

Adventures beyond

While the resort feels like a world unto itself, it’s also an ideal base for exploration. Just a short stroll away stands Cape Zanpa Lighthouse—one of the rare few in Japan you can actually climb. With the wind in my hair and the vast ocean unfurling before me, I couldn’t help but feel like I was standing at the very edge of the world.

Just fifteen minutes away, is the historic Zakimi Castle Ruins, a UNESCO World Heritage Site whispering stories of Okinawa’s past. Yachimun no Sato, the famous pottery village, was another gem—watching artisans shape clay into beautiful Ryukyu ceramics made me appreciate the artistry woven into Okinawan culture.

Final thoughts

Grand Mercure Okinawa Cape Zanpa Resort isn’t just a place to stay—it’s a place that stays with you. Effortlessly blending nature, culture, and comfort, it strikes the perfect balance between rustic charm and refined ease, where sophistication meets the sea breeze. Its unfussy, timeless beach style creates a deeply relaxing atmosphere, ideal for multi-generational families or anyone craving a great-value beach escape. Whether you’re floating in the pool, savouring local delicacies, or simply watching the waves roll in from your balcony, there’s an undeniable joy in every moment here.

Would I come back? In a heartbeat.
