Tried and tested by us, these are the very best boutique hotels in Athens, Greece
Whether you're after a seaside stay or full cultural immersion.
Whether you're after a seaside stay or full cultural immersion.
The new era of boutique hotels in Athens redefines the essence of luxury, displaying the city’s rich cultural legacy while celebrating fashionable indulgences that give these accommodations an oomph factor. Extraordinary in design and architecture, the best places to stay in the Greek capital epitomise comfort and artistic exuberance, and they are a must for explorers with a penchant for the unusual.
The 79-room Athens NEW Hotel is the brainchild of Brazilian designer duo Humberto and Fernando Campana, who worked on the property alongside the University of Thessaly graduates to construct a design-centric respite in the otherwise busy centre of Athens. The result is an immersive accommodation with Greek themes, dapper interiors, and dominant artistic expressions through paintings and sculptures.
Rooms at the hotel have a Miami-esque feel, with accent walls contrasting softer, whiter tones. The in-room art expands from one corner to the other rather than being framed in a painting, giving the space a vibrant flow. Wooden flooring, custom furniture, floor-to-ceiling windows, and en-suites give all the bedrooms, from the studios and suites to the penthouse, a plush feel. The latter stands out for its carpeting, separate living and sleeping areas, and terrace views of the Acropolis.
Dining at the NEW is a rooftop affair. The indoor-outdoor Art Lounge offers city-wide views while plating traditionally loved Greek flavours. Guests can also read any of the 2,000-plus art books in the library. The New Lobby Bar, with its mosaic walls and Mediterranean cuisine, has an uber-cool 1970s aura.

Originally an apartment building, AthensWas is a 21-room design boutique hotel located near Plaka on Dionysiou Areopagitou Street. Offering stunning views of the Parthenon, a welcoming lobby with glass windows, and heavy use of walnut wood and marble, the hotel has a contemporary character, albeit Greek in essence. Interiors by Stage Design Office include bold, solid features that transition from shared spaces to private abodes beautifully.
Once inside the rooms, wood-panelled walls, dark colour schemes, carpeted sections, and marble bathrooms create a cosy yet refined feel. Soundproof glass, flat-screen TVs, Nespresso machines, in-room dining, and views that range from the city and street to the courtyard and the Acropolis further make every stay here all the more special.
Food lovers should not miss out on dining at SENSE, the hotel’s rooftop restaurant with impressive views and a menu inspired by the Eleusinian Mysteries. For something a little more usual, there is Modern Eatery, where you can taste a freshly made stone-oven pizza and pair it with a glass of Greek wine.

The Modernist was previously the Canadian Embassy, situated in a quiet residential area of Kolonaki. In its present avatar, the 38-room boutique hotel in Athens boasts Danish design with mid-century features, amalgamating the minimal, suggestive of its moniker, with eye-catching rows of balconies that form an integral part of its façade.
Developed by architects FORMrelated, guests here have the option to stay in rooms labelled S, M, L, and XL. Open closets and ergonomic furniture allude to an industrial design ethos. Still, being classic Scandi, these are minimalistic interiors without the lack of any creature comforts. En-suite showers, organic toiletries, solid wood floors, and designer lights compliment the subtle boutique elements in the rooms, like the free book titled The Modernist Traveler for every guest.
The hotel’s sundeck on the roof is the place to be during the warm summer months. At the same time, The Modernist’s all-day café is perfect to fill up before heading out to explore the city.

Plato’s Academy plays the muse for the design aesthetics of the Academias in Kolonaki, the city’s historical and cultural centre. Focusing on science, art, and philosophy, HOK Interiors and MTArchitects have concocted a boutique hotel that is a multi-sensory living space with an emphasis on architecture and design.
Built in 1970 as an office edifice by architect E. Vourekas, the hotel is now a buzzing getaway with 60 rooms, restaurants, a heated indoor pool, a bar, and a spa.
Classic in its colour palette, the rooms follow a black-and-white schema with white walls pitted against dark furniture and the occasional art break. In-room features are also pretty expansive; you can expect large-screen TVs with satellite channels and Chromecast, high-speed internet, marble bathrooms, Diptyque products, coffee makers, room service, and curated books.
Food forms the essential link between comfort and design at the Academias. Start your day with an a la carte breakfast at the Symposium and end with Japanese fusion food at the NYX Rooftop restaurant. In between, chill at Plato Lounge Bar and let the mixology team whip you up something extraordinary.

A lush boutique hotel with Parthenon views, The Dolli was built by famed architect Andreas Kriezis in 1925 as the private residence of ship owner Dimitrios Kallimasiotis. Over the decades, the building was used for commerce until its 2023 renovation by Grecotel into a swanky architectural marvel that houses 46 rooms and apartments for discerning guests.
Among the best boutique hotels in Athens, The Dolli dazzles in the most modish way possible. High ceilings, arches and mouldings, Picasso paintings, 18th-century antiques, and custom furniture link it with local history and tradition. An infinity pool with city views, Le Salon, an art-filled coffee and drink spot, a rooftop restaurant, and Le Bar Secret are modern-day additions elevating the hotel’s appeal.
Rooms at The Dolli emanate a France-meets-island influence with white and pastel shades, designer furniture, wooden flooring, and marble baths with walk-in showers. Custom in-room bars, select furnishings, and large windows or balconies complete the setup of these welcoming dwellings.

The Roc Club is your access to the vibrant Vouliagmeni and Athens Riviera, which offers unmatched glamour through yacht clubs, promenades, restaurants, the lake and the sea. A fashionable boutique property with a soothing personality, the hotel constructs an atmospheric environment through its muted shades and flushes of colour, as seen in the paintings and sculptures of Angelos Goulandris.
The 34 rooms are light, summery, and spacious, with white and natural oak wood as the primary shades. As a result, the final look is modern, mixed with comfort in the form of marble bathrooms and present-day amenities.
The club’s most happening spot, though, is the Roc Pool. Private terraces, loungers, and sea views make it an idyllic spot to enliven and rejuvenate. Simultaneously, the hotel offers three distinct dining opportunities to guests. The Roc Pool Bar is perfect for refreshments, the Roc Rooftop is a lovely spot for a romantic dinner, and the Roc Veranda is where you can munch on delectable Mediterranean delights.

Thanks to its transformation under creative director Eftihia Stefanidi, a 1920s neoclassical townhouse has now emerged as one of the best boutique hotels in Athens and a true hidden gem in Kolonaki. An aesthetically boutique property with six individual suites, Shila exudes vintage chic from every nook and cranny. Original terrazzo floors and high ceilings showcase the building’s past grandeur, while evocative modern art links it to the present.
Shila’s old-world charm translates into its rooms, which feature distressed wall finishes, large bathrooms, organic botanicals, carpets, couches, retro light fixtures, and bespoke beds. Modernism is evident in mood lighting, expresso machines, artisanal minibars, Bluetooth speakers, and iPads with Netflix.
The common spaces are equally enchanting. The lobby, with its electric piano, mosaic flooring, and library, in addition to the roof terrace garden, are places where you can take a minute to rejuvenate or mingle.

Gourmands visiting the capital, rejoice, for Ergon House is your dream come true. This experiential stay combines the concepts of a marketplace with an inn, making it arguably the only food-centric boutique hotel in Athens. The ground floor of Ergon House is a cornucopia of culinary amenities, from a fishmonger and roastery to a kitchen, cooking space, and lounge.
The rooms are no less remarkable, with minimal design, exceptional comfort, and style at the forefront. Marshall speakers, coffee machines, double-glazed windows, mood lighting, curated minibar, en-suites with rain showers and marble tiles, and open closets help enhance every moment you spend inside.
Retiré Bar, open from April to October, is enough reason to book a stay at Ergon House. The rooftop seasonal establishment is among Athens’ most romantic hidden spots and a great place to try local wine and craft beer. At the same time, The Kitchen honours farm-to-table cuisine, drawing attention to ingredients immersed in Greek gourmet nostalgia and tradition.

A collaboration between Domes and Grivalia Hospitality, 91 Athens offers resort-like boutique accommodations that immerse guests in a beach club vibe. Any doubts go out the window once you realise that the property comes with eight full-size and two mini tennis courts with coaching possibilities, as well as the Soma Spa featuring private treatment rooms, a hydro pool, and a hammam. The overall sentiment of the resort is very 60s and 70s without being overly nostalgic.
The highlight of 91 Athens Riviera is its 28 luxury domes or cabanas. A novelty factor, but not without reason, these unique accommodations include a private deck, super king-size beds, en-suites, desks and sitting areas, and wooden flooring. The sizes vary to accommodate couples or families; some even come with plunge pools.
Eating at the hotel is an exceptional experience. On a daily basis, the clubhouse is your go-to place for snacks and a relaxed drink. However, Barbarossa Paros is where culinary greatness arises in full glory. Under the watchful eyes of Chef Dimitris Nikolis, the hotel’s much-cherished restaurant serves the most delicious Aegean-inspired dishes with a hint of Asian fusion.

A hop and a skip away from Monastiraki Square, Mona is the sister property of Shila (mentioned above) and shares a similar aura. Built inside a 1950s textile factory, the hotel’s eight floors are home to 20 rooms, a speakeasy, a café-lounge-bar, and a member’s rooftop event space. Spread across the property are various artefacts, original pieces such as metal windows, terrazzo floors, an iron staircase, and custom furniture made at homegrown design studio Shila Maison D’objects.
The open-plan guestrooms at Mona are an eclectic mix of the old and the new. They feature custom knit carpets, artisanal minibars, espresso machines, bespoke lighting, bathtubs, Bluetooth speakers, and iPads with Netflix. Surprisingly, the industrial-like exposed fixtures are not precisely a nod to modern design but a homage to the building’s past. When making a reservation, we recommend opting for one of the rooms with a balcony, especially since they are limited in number.
Mona’s Living Room, or lobby if you will, is the place to eat, drink, lounge, and make merry. The Rooftop is ideal for admiring city views and partaking in special happenings. The Underground follows suit, hosting events in a cosy atmospheric setting that showcases Athens’ cultural diversity.

Monumental Hotel invites guests to experience an 1881 neoclassical building, promising an architecturally exclusive holiday. Originally built by architect Ernst Ziller, the now “listed building” and “modern monument” in the culturally hip neighbourhood of Psyrri is an immensely intimate escape, housing only five suites and four rooms. Restored to its present-day glory by MPlusM architects, the hotel pays tribute to its past via original frescoes while enchanting guests with its minimal Scandinavian design ethos.
The contrast in interiors between the rooms at Monument is distinctly pleasant, but the common theme of vintage meets Scandi runs across seamlessly. The high ceilings with murals are a noteworthy artistic feature, as is the spaciousness of the abodes, the plants, the wooden flooring, and the pastel colours that give each area a soothing disposition. Our room pick is the Nidus, a quaint little resting spot in the attic with a jacuzzi and Acropolis views.
Breakfast at the hotel is a simple yet satisfying affair. As for those looking to unwind, the rooftop is perfect to lounge. Otherwise, head to the in-house spa for treatment, a sauna, and a hammam.
