A birthday celebration in paradise and a first glimpse of the Maldives? It didn’t take much convincing. When the offer came to experience the newly opened Centara Grand Lagoon Maldives, I said yes immediately. Having welcomed its first guests in April 2025 and already making waves (pun intended), the resort promised a blend of Thai hospitality and Maldivian dreaminess. Spoiler: it delivered. Big time.

First impressions
Getting to Centara Grand Lagoon Maldives is refreshingly simple. A swift, 40-minute speedboat journey from Malé delivers you to a cluster of islands that make up The Atollia, Centara Hotels & Resorts’ multi-island destination. One moment you’re watching the bustle of airport boats drift by; the next, you’re stepping onto an island defined by quiet sophistication.
While sister property, Centara Mirage Lagoon, buzzes with family-friendly energy, the tone shifts the moment your buggy crosses the bridge into Centara Grand Lagoon Maldives. Think grown-up calm, a place where serenity, privacy, and thoughtful design come together in perfect balance.
Open-air corridors, pale woods, and expansive views create an immediate sense of lightness. The architecture doesn’t compete with the scenery; it frames it. Every direction reveals the kind of soft turquoise water and endless horizon that have made the Maldives a permanent fixture on travellers’ wish lists.
The villas: private pools for everyone (yes, really)

One-bedroom Beach Pool Villa
Centara clearly built this resort on one guiding principle: everybody deserves a private pool. Ranging from 78 to a sprawling 290 sq-m, every villa, beach, overwater, one/two/three-bedroom, comes with a pool, a Jacuzzi, or both. Over the course of my stay, I was fortunate to experience two villa types, each offering its own interpretation of calm.
My first stop: an 88 sq-m One-Bedroom Beach Pool Villa, with direct beach access and a private plunge pool. The villa, designed for up to three adults or two adults and a child, feels purpose-built for unwinding. The bathroom is particularly impressive, featuring a deep tub, a separate shower, and luxurious Panpuri amenities from Thailand, a detail I loved so much that the team gifted me some to take home.

Design at the property feels sophisticated but not stuffy
Then came villa number two, the 100 sq-m One-Bedroom Overwater Pool Villa (main image), and yes, it’s exactly the Maldives fantasy you think it is and exactly the scene I wanted to wake up to on my birthday. Everywhere you turn, whether you’re lounging in bed, soaking in the tub, or cooling off in your private pool, the lagoon is right there, photobombing your stay in the best possible way.
Before breakfast, I slipped straight into the lagoon, snorkel in hand, and swam toward the small house reef just metres from my villa. Gliding over coral teaming with marine life, I watched parrotfish, clownfish, and curious reef dwellers begin their day. It felt like the ocean’s version of a morning parade, subtle, unhurried, and meant just for me. The rest of the day was spent between floating, reading, eating and watching the lagoon shift with the light; pure bliss.

The Three-Bedroom Overwater Residence is perfect for a group
If you’re travelling with a full entourage, there’s one accommodation that quietly steals the show: the Three-Bedroom Sunset Overwater Pool Residence. At 290 sq-m it features three bedrooms, generous bathrooms, a private pool, a huge deck, and a kitchen where the chef will happily spoil you. With room for up to seven adults, it’s perfect for groups who want space to spread out without ever losing sight of the lagoon.
Eating your way around the island

Indulge in a seafood feast at Bluefin
Centara Grand Lagoon’s dining scene feels like a world tour you can enjoy without ever changing out of your flip-flops. Your culinary journey begins with killer views at The Gallery, the property’s all-day dining hub, where chefs man live tandoor and teppan grills. If you’re in the mood for fresh seafood, Bluefin delivers a polished Mediterranean beach club vibe and live music.
For those happiest submerged waist-deep in a pool with a drink in hand, Coco Drift, the resort’s swim-up bar, shakes up breezy cocktails, mocktails and offers light bites. Sunset Social, the resort’s overwater champagne bar, offers guests the perfect vantage point for golden-hour rituals. Later, you can drift into The Club, an intimate fine-dining venue serving raw bar selections, delicate tapas and curated wines.

Head to The Club for sundowners
The highlight was a private dinner arranged by the team on the beach, where a bespoke menu of Maldivian cuisine created one of the most memorable moments of the trip.
Guests at Centara Grand Lagoon can also dine across at sister property, Centara Mirage Lagoon Maldives, enjoying a wider range of lively, family-friendly restaurants as part of The Atollia’s shared meal plans
Wellness

SPA Cenvaree Retreat is the place for relaxation and rejuvenation
Rooted in Thai wellness traditions, treatments at SPA Cenvaree Retreat blend herbal compresses with long, flowing strokes delivered by expert therapists. After 90 minutes, I emerged feeling as though every last knot had been gently coaxed away.
Playtime
For an active traveller like me, the resort ticked every box. I dove headfirst into the line-up of adventures on offer, from jet-skiing and Seabob gliding to long kayaking sessions and paddleboarding across glass-calm water.
But the true standouts were the parasailing, which lifted me into views I won’t soon forget, and a dolphin excursion that felt nothing short of magical. I also joined a snorkelling trip out to a nearby reef; seasonal conditions meant visibility wasn’t at its peak, a gentle reminder that even in paradise, nature keeps its own rhythm.
The vibe
Here’s the thing: Centara Grand Lagoon Maldives knows exactly what it is, luxurious, yes, but not stiff. The staff are warm, and the entire island carries an energy that gently reminds you that relaxation is an art form.
