Setting the scene

The entry experience
Brisbane has no shortage of smart riverside hotels, but Crystalbrook Vincent arrives with a personality that’s hard to miss. Sitting beneath the sweeping steel arches of the Story Bridge and tucked into the cliff edge behind Howard Smith Wharves, the 166-room property enjoys one of the city’s most energetic locations.
From the moment we arrived, the hotel felt closely tied to the rhythm of the precinct around it. Cyclists zipped past on the riverside paths, CityCat ferries glided along the Brisbane River, and the restaurants and bars of the redeveloped Howard Smith Wharves hummed with an ever-changing crowd.
The hotel is almost hidden within this movement. Designed by SJB, the building’s angular forms feel sculpted, giving the property a dramatic architectural presence. Inside, a mix of stone, brass and velvet creates interiors that feel part boutique hotel, part modern art gallery.
An art hotel with a story

Works by Vincent Fantauzzo welcome guests in the lobby
When Crystalbrook Vincent first opened, it was known as The Fantauzzo, named after Australian artist Vincent Fantauzzo, whose work features throughout the hotel. When Crystalbrook Collection acquired the property in 2020, the hotel kept the artistic theme but adopted the artist’s first name instead.
Fantauzzo’s work now defines the hotel’s character. More than 500 giclée prints and photographic portraits appear across the lobby, corridors and guest rooms. The imagery is bold and contemporary, with famous faces adorning the walls in dramatic black-and-white or cinematic tones. Walking the guest corridors becomes a gallery experience in itself, with large-scale portraits appearing at regular intervals.
The room

The rooms are colourful and vibrant
We were upgraded to a River Master Balcony Room (main image) on the sixth (top) floor of the accommodation tower. As one of the hotel’s most generous categories, at between 54 and 73 square metres, the space felt closer to a small apartment.
Entry is to a lounge area with comfortable seating, before the room opens towards floor-to-ceiling glass overlooking the river precinct below. Our balcony, with a four-seater dining table, provided views of the Brisbane city skyline and the enormous steel spans of the Story Bridge.
The décor is colourful without feeling chaotic. Emerald and navy velvet fabrics with splashes of colour contrast against the timber flooring and concrete textures. Fantauzzo’s portraits give the room a distinctive sense of place. The king bed proved extremely comfortable while thick blackout drapes and double-glazed windows kept the room dark and quiet. All of which made for a great night’s sleep.
From our balcony, we found ourselves engrossed in the life unfolding both below and above. Early mornings brought joggers and dog walkers, and late afternoon saw CBD office workers and cyclists streaming through the pedestrian lanes and wharf buildings heading for home. A twilight bridge-climb group sang ‘happy birthday’ and, much to our surprise, enthusiastically returned our waves.
Bathroom amenities come from Origins’ Peace of Mind collection. The peppermint, basil and eucalyptus scent is particularly refreshing after a humid Brisbane day.
Crystalbrook promotes a sustainability-focused philosophy it calls “Responsible Luxury”, reflected in details such as refillable pump bottles, recycled timber room key cards and coat hangers made from reprocessed paper.
Food and drink

A visit to Fiume on the rooftop is a must
Crystalbrook Vincent keeps its food and beverage offering to two outlets. Mews sits just off the lobby and is primarily a breakfast venue. The menu focuses on inventive brunch-style dishes rather than the usual hotel buffet format. Coffee arrived quickly and was excellent, important in a city like Brisbane where café standards run high. The Peachy Keen dish proved the surprise hit of the morning: sourdough toast topped with whipped lemon thyme ricotta, grilled peaches and smoked chorizo. Sounds unusual, but the flavours worked beautifully.
The hotel’s most atmospheric spot, Fiume, the rooftop bar on the third level of the connected building, overlooks the Brisbane River and Howard Smith Wharves. We opted for the Feed Me shared dining option, which presented a steady flow of nominated dishes. Over a leisurely couple of hours, we worked through oysters with mignonette, warm sourdough with cultured butter, cured mackerel with apple and finger lime, and a beautifully cooked Queensland sirloin.
Everything at Fiume is designed for relaxed grazing rather than formal dining, matching the setting perfectly. My partner ordered a non-alcoholic Pair Affair cocktail while I sampled a couple of Australian wines by the glass. As darkness settled, the Story Bridge lit up, ferries passed quietly along the river, and the crowd below ebbed and flowed between bars and restaurants. It was one of those Brisbane evenings where the warm air and riverside atmosphere make you reluctant to leave.
