We review Four Seasons Hotel Firenze, and find solace in the largest private garden in the heart of the city
There’s even a Renaissance chapel hidden within the property’s walls.

When selecting a hotel, I always gravitate toward those that are deeply tied to the essence of their destination. Whether it’s the rustic allure of Six Senses Samui in Thailand, the cloud-grazing heights of Andaz Singapore, or the grandeur of the 18th-century Airelles Gordes, La Bastide in Provence, my stays are an ode to each locale’s unique spirit. So, when the Renaissance cradle of Florence beckoned this summer, staying anywhere but a 15th-century Palazzo, namely Four Seasons Hotel Firenze, was simply unthinkable.
This stay was paid for by its author, while the Renaissance Chapel dinner mentioned below was complimentary. All thoughts and opinions are our own.
Opened in 2008 and recently named number 19 on the World’s 50 Best Hotels 2024 list, Four Seasons Hotel Firenze offers a rare blend of Medici grandeur and modern luxury. Tucked away within the city’s largest private garden, this palatial estate is an oasis just outside the bustling heart of Florence. With the Duomo and Uffizi Gallery a leisurely stroll away, it was the perfect base for my Florentine escape, set amidst history and complete with impeccable service.
A short 15-minute drive from the airport, my taxi wound through narrow streets before halting in front of an unassuming door. But don’t let its simplicity fool you – the moment you step inside, you are enveloped by the grandeur of Renaissance Florence. The hotel’s lobby, once the courtyard of the Palazzo della Gherardesca, is awash in natural light streaming through its glass ceiling. Frescoes wrap the walls in stucco splendour, statues dot the space, and at the centre stands Bacchus himself, as if presiding over this opulent scene.
The property is divided into two grand spaces – the Palazzo, home to 79 rooms and suites, and the Villa, a former 16th-century convent at the other end of the garden. Though slightly removed from the Arno and Ponte Vecchio, the property offers a shuttle to the city’s centre, though the real charm lies in walking through Florence’s sun-dappled streets from such a regal sanctuary.
Coming from the densely packed streets of Hong Kong, I couldn’t help but marvel at the sheer expanse of these gardens – a rare luxury in any city. Stepping into this verdant haven felt like stepping back in time, with ancient trees, fountains, and even a small Ionic temple scattered across the landscape. Among the centuries-old charm, contemporary sculptures by Danish artist Bjørn Okholm Skaarup bring a playful yet elegant touch, adding to the garden’s timeless beauty.
At its heart lies a pool, a seamless blend of old-world refinement and modern comfort. Framed by manicured hedges and elegant loungers, it exudes an air of exclusivity. On scorching summer days when the mercury soared past 38 degrees, a dip here felt like pure luxury – easily one of the chicest I’ve experienced.
The hotel’s rooms reflect its rich heritage, each a testament to Italian craftsmanship. For the true Renaissance experience, the historical suites are unparalleled. Think painted ceilings, period furnishings, and Capodimonte Majolica floors, with standout features like a private garden or a view of Florence’s iconic Duomo.
I, however, stayed in a classic Four Seasons Room in the Palazzo, with serene garden views. The décor felt like stepping into a refined countryside estate – elegant, pastoral, and utterly charming. From the artisanal chocolates on the pillow to the luxurious Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella bath products (sidebar: a visit to the brand’s flagship outpost is a must when in Florence), every detail was immaculate, making my stay feel truly bespoke.
Dining at Four Seasons Firenze is an experience in itself. With the Michelin-starred Il Palagio at its helm, the hotel reimagines Tuscan classics with contemporary flair. A highlight was an evening spent at the Atrium Bar, where I sipped on a perfectly crafted Bellini while my companion savoured a Vintage Negroni—each cocktail a tribute to Florentine sophistication.
Combining Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts’ knack for organising one-of-a-kind experiences and the city’s reputation for history and gastronomy, the hotel offers a range of exceptional dining experiences that are guaranteed to make your stay a memorable one. Imagine dining beneath the centuries-old beech tree or having a candlelit dinner on the hotel’s rooftop terrace, where panoramic views of the city stretch out before you.
For me, the pièce de résistance was an unforgettable meal inside the Renaissance Chapel. Surrounded by frescoes and mother-of-pearl inlays, we enjoyed a private four-course dinner, prepared by Il Palagio’s culinary team, in a setting that felt like stepping into a Botticelli painting. It was an evening where history and modern indulgence intertwined in the most magical way.
Breakfast is also a highlight of any stay, served at Il Palagio or on the adjacent garden terrace and presented in the form of a semi-buffet highlighting seasonal local produce and regional recipes such as a very indulgent torta caprese.
For me, staying at Four Seasons Hotel Firenze felt like living within a Renaissance dream. Each day spent exploring the city’s artistic masterpieces was mirrored by the grandeur of returning to a palazzo steeped in history. If you’re seeking a luxurious and culturally immersive Florentine escape, there is no better place to reside. With its impeccable service, stunning architecture, and unparalleled location, this is where history and modern luxury blend seamlessly—where Renaissance Florence truly comes alive.
