When it comes to the London boutique hotel scene, there are plenty of charming options to choose from across the city. But one newcomer that should definitely be on your radar is Sun Street Hotel. Just minutes from buzzing Liverpool Street Station, this trendy property has both Shoreditch and the City of London on its doorstep. Find out why we absolutely loved our stay in this quirky, art-filled property.

Sun Street Hotel review

The design

Lounge Sun Street London
Get comfy in the Lounge and find a corner for quiet chats

Hidden away on a quiet street, six former Georgian townhouses between Liverpool Street and Moorgate stations have been given a new lease on life. With design by Bowler James Brindley, inspiration was taken from VC Vickers’ The Google Book, a 1913 publication which is filled with weird and wonderful illustrations of imaginary birds.

It’s got to be said that the interiors here are a feast for the eyes. To the right of reception, a rich red library invites you to stay a while and take in one of the many tomes that line the shelves. Head in the other direction and a deep blue lounge leads into the moody bar where cocktails are themed around the Google Birds and pack a mighty punch; we recommend The Lemon Squeezer crafted from tequila, chilli, agave, and coriander.

Extravagantly rich wallpaper lines the elevator while those taking the stairs will delight in the clusters of quirky art pieces that can be found across the walls. It’s maximalism done right, and I’m a fan from the outset.

The room

Living room Dance Suite
The Dance Suite has a comfortable living room with colourful and patterned design elements

Of the 41 rooms and suites at the property, we were lucky enough to be staying in the largest available, and what a complete delight it was. Named Dance after George Dance the Younger, the original architect of the 18th Century property, it’s a spacious and inviting suite that anyone would be glad to come home to.

Elegant burgundy and deep blue colours, contrasting patterns, and layered textures are continued across the dining, lounging, sleeping, and bathing areas here. It actually feels a bit Parisian in the living room thanks to the clashing of the floral sofa with the leopard-print cushions. I really enjoy the surprising details, like the feather fringing on cushions and the chainmail-like light fixtures.

Odes to the heritage of the original building can be seen in the exposed brick wall of the bedroom alongside the louvred window shutters. The bed is oversized and so comfortable that sleep comes quick and deep. House of Holland cushions finished with tassels and a mustard throw complete the soft furnishings and give off a homey-luxe vibe.

Sun Street Hotel bathroom
The bath was so deep and relaxing I had to indulge in multiple soaks complete with the hotel’s signature bath salts

The spacious bathroom includes a freestanding tub, which we can confirm is as deep and delightful as you’d desire, complete with Quercus Penhaligon’s toiletries and Sun Street Hotel bath salts for long, lazy soaks.

The food and drink

The Orangery Sun Street Hotel
Breakfast is served in The Orangery

Breakfast is served in The Orangery, an airy space complete with burnt orange banquets, monkey-strewn wallpaper, and a glass ceiling to make the space beautifully light-filled and breezy.

Guests can enjoy a small selection of continental breakfast favourites, like homemade granola at the buffet as well as selecting from the menu. We had to try the pancakes served with kaya jam and Chantilly cream and we were delighted with both fluffiness and flavour. The avocado toast with poached eggs also hit the spot, though we’d have loved two pieces of toast (or are we just greedy?!)

Dinner is served at Quercus, a darker and moodier design story takes over here and the space even includes an adjoining private room that can be closed off for intimate dinners and special occasions.

Helmed by Executive Chef Stephen Englefield, the menu here is South East Asian inspired and crafted with the very best British ingredients. We indulged in Devon Crab and Cornwall lobster during our stay. Don’t skip out on desserts and the chance to sample a wonderful selection of British sparkling wines too.

For design fans like myself who just love a blend of past and present with a heavy dose of fun, Sun Street Hotel is the perfect place from which to explore London.
