W Kuala Lumpur
W Kuala Lumpur is a hotel that makes absolutely no attempt to blend into the background – and that’s precisely why we like it. In an enviable location right beside the Petronas Twin Towers, the hotel combines bold, colourful design with playful references to Malaysian culture, from batik-inspired patterns to tropical motifs and its distinctive pixel artwork. Upstairs, the 150 rooms and suites are more restrained, but still carry the same contemporary Malaysian influence, with floor-to-ceiling windows offering spectacular city views. Our Deluxe King room gave us an almost front-row view of the Petronas Towers from the bed.
The hotel is just as much about what happens outside the bedroom. The WET Deck is the place to be, with a rooftop pool, cocktails, DJs and those all-important Twin Tower views, while FLOCK serves a generous breakfast and YEN delivers an excellent Cantonese feast. We particularly loved afternoon tea at The Living Room, which takes a more creative approach by combining French pâtisserie with Malaysian favourites such as Penang white curry mee, satay and Wagyu roti john. W Kuala Lumpur won’t appeal to anyone looking for quiet, minimalist luxury, but if you like your hotels energetic, colourful and full of personality, it’s a hugely enjoyable place to stay.

Frequently asked questions: best boutique hotels Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
For most first-time visitors, KLCC or Bukit Bintang are the most convenient areas. KLCC puts you close to the Petronas Twin Towers, KLCC Park and some of the city’s best luxury hotels, while Bukit Bintang is better for shopping, restaurants, street food and nightlife.
It depends on what you want from your trip. KLCC is the better choice for sightseeing, skyline views and a more polished luxury-hotel experience. Bukit Bintang is livelier, with shopping malls, restaurants, Jalan Alor’s street food and nightlife right outside your door.
Choose KLCC. W Kuala Lumpur and The RuMa are particularly good choices if you want a luxury hotel with easy access to the towers. The Petronas Twin Towers and KLCC Park are the defining attractions of the neighbourhood.
Bukit Bintang is the best choice. The area is home to major shopping centres including Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, Starhill Gallery and Lot 10, with everything from international luxury brands to Malaysian designers.
Yes. Chinatown is a good choice if you want a more historic and characterful side of Kuala Lumpur. It is particularly appealing to travellers interested in street food, markets, heritage architecture and independent cafés and restaurants. Else Kuala Lumpur is one of the area’s more stylish boutique options.
KLCC is a particularly good option for families because of its central location, KLCC Park, the Petronas Twin Towers and easy access to shopping and restaurants. Look for hotels with larger rooms or connecting rooms. Lanson Place Bukit Ceylon is another practical choice because its serviced residences have separate living areas and kitchens.
For a first visit, three nights is a good starting point. This gives you enough time to see the Petronas Twin Towers and KLCC, explore Bukit Bintang and Chinatown, sample the food scene and perhaps take a half-day trip to the Batu Caves. Four nights allows for a more relaxed pace.
Not necessarily, but it makes life easier if you are visiting Kuala Lumpur for the first time. The city is spread out and traffic can be heavy, so staying close to the areas you want to explore can save considerable travel time.
No. Kuala Lumpur has an extensive rail network, including the MRT, LRT and monorail, and taxis and ride-hailing services are widely available. For most visitors, a combination of public transport, walking and Grab is easier than driving yourself.
The KLIA Ekspres is usually the quickest and most predictable option if you’re staying centrally. The non-stop train takes 28 minutes from KLIA Terminal 1 to KL Sentral and 33 minutes from Terminal 2, with services running every 20 minutes. From KL Sentral you can connect to the LRT, MRT, monorail, taxi or Grab for the final part of your journey.
If traffic is heavy, the KLIA Ekspres is generally the safer bet for a predictable journey into central Kuala Lumpur. A taxi or Grab is more convenient if you have lots of luggage or are travelling with a family, as it takes you directly to your hotel. Journey times by road vary considerably depending on traffic.
Parts of it are. KLCC, Bukit Bintang and Chinatown can be explored on foot, but the distances between neighbourhoods can be considerable. Kuala Lumpur’s heat and humidity can also make longer walks uncomfortable. For anything beyond your immediate neighbourhood, the MRT, LRT, monorail or Grab are often more practical.
