For most people, Dubai is defined by skyscrapers, beach clubs, and record-breaking attractions. For me, the region has always represented something a little more grounded. Growing up in Bahrain, the desert landscape was a constant presence, so I was excited to recently reconnect with a side of the region that shaped my childhood. Less than an hour from downtown Dubai, glass towers and multi-lane motorways give way to rolling dunes and an almost complete absence of noise. Opening in 1999 as the region’s pioneering luxury desert resort, I checked into Al Maha, a Luxury Collection Desert Resort & Spa, Dubai, which remains one of the region’s most iconic stays.

The setting
The property is teeming with wildlife like the Arabian oryx
Hidden within Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve (DDCR), Al Maha sits at the heart of one of the UAE’s most significant conservation projects, protecting a staggering 225 square kilometres of desert, or around 5% of the emirate’s total land area.
Rather than competing with the landscape, the resort has been designed around it, positioned to look out across the desert where wildlife moves undisturbed, offering a glimpse into what existed long before Dubai became a global destination.
The arrival
Check-in happens in the private majlis
The journey is part of the arrival experience. 8km beyond the reserve’s entrance gate, the final traces of modern Dubai disappear completely, and by the time we arrived at Al Maha, there was nothing but golden dunes stretching all around us.
We were greeted with burning frankincense, a traditional Bedouin gesture to encourage positive energy, before we were shown into a private majlis for check-in. We were introduced to the resort while sipping on their signature Desert Bloom, a blend of camel milk, rosewater and aromatic spices, which made for an intriguing drink with a thoughtful nod towards Emirati culture.

The villas
Our Royal Villa was a luxurious retreat
Accommodation takes the form of ultra-private Bedouin-inspired villas, designed to frame the surrounding desert. Even after more than two decades, I noticed that the interiors still feel authentic and timeless.
We stayed in Royal Villa 30, a luxurious 175-square-metre retreat with two en-suite bedrooms positioned on either side of a central living room. Handcrafted furniture, Persian rugs and antiques dotted the villa without feeling overly themed, while ceilings draped in fabrics softened the rooms and added another layer of elegance. Doors opened onto a temperature-controlled private pool, and our large terrace overlooked the dunes in complete privacy.
The spacious bathrooms feature enormous bathtubs, separate rain showers and luxurious amenities. Extra details like local dates, dried fruits, premium teas and a complimentary decanter of sherry made it feel more like a private residence.

Wildlife encounters
Guests will delight in the wildlife that roam through the resort
It doesn’t take long before the wildlife steals the show. Arabian mountain gazelles wander through the resort and, although naturally shy, we even had a few pop by for a drink from our pool, while watching us curiously.
Deeper into the reserve, the more elusive sand gazelle and striking white Arabian oryx have found sanctuary. Once extinct in the wild, the Arabian oryx has made a remarkable recovery through the reserve’s conservation efforts, with more than 700 now roaming the area. Spotting them today has become one of Al Maha’s defining experiences. Ancient ghaf trees, the UAE’s national tree, together with over 65,000 planted trees and carefully created watering holes, provide vital shelter and water for wildlife in this harsh desert environment.
During our stay, we were lucky enough to spot both gazelle species, Arabian oryx, a red fox and a desert monitor lizard. More than 180 bird species have also been recorded within the reserve. There are no scheduled feeding sessions or staged encounters; the wildlife remains truly wild.

We really enjoyed oour sunset camel trek
While the villas provide plenty of reasons to stay put, Al Maha’s activities turned out to be one of our key highlights. Our morning wildlife drive combined an insightful explanation of the pioneering conservation work with some rather exhilarating dune bashing.
Later that afternoon, our sunset camel trek ended with drinks at a stunning, linen-draped bar atop a dune, with cushions laid out for the perfect sunset view. It became one of the most memorable family moments of our stay. Horseback riding through the reserve at sunrise became an unforgettable highlight, with Arabian oryx grazing all around us; a peaceful way to experience the desert before the heat of the day set in.
Falconry, archery, and additional private experiences such as sunset picnics complete the programme, celebrating traditions and encouraging guests to experience the desert fully.
Dining
Delicious dining with delicious views
Meals are served against a backdrop that few restaurants in the world can rival. Al Diwaan overlooks the watering hole in the distance, where gazelles and oryx regularly wander into view.
Breakfast offered everything from freshly prepared shakshuka and smoked salmon bagels to excellent Middle Eastern cold cuts and cheese platters, including exceptionally creamy labneh. Lunch and dinner combined international favourites with modern interpretations of regional specialities, but the beautifully prepared lamb ouzi, served for sharing and delicately spiced, was the standout dish of our stay.
Perhaps what impressed me as much as the food itself was the atmosphere. Guests tended to switch off, conversations replaced mobile phones, and meals were enjoyed without distraction. It felt wonderfully refreshing.

For me, it was a chance to reconnect with a part of the Middle East that shaped my childhood. For others, it offers a rare opportunity to discover a quieter side of Dubai that many visitors never experience.
That is what makes Al Maha so special. Rather than competing with the city, it celebrates the desert itself, protecting its wildlife, preserving its heritage and reminding guests that long before Dubai became a global icon, this landscape was where its story began.
