For the past few years, each time I rode my scooter through the streets of Pererenan in Bali, the bold terracotta brickwork of Further Hotel would catch my eye. Against the vivid blue skies and lush greenery, the warm hues of the buildings created a striking contrast that piqued my curiosity. Noticing similarly styled smaller facades nearby, I soon discovered that this was more than just a hotel—it was a thoughtfully diffused architectural experience inviting exploration. The design aficionado in me couldn’t resist checking in.

While this stay was complimentary, all thoughts and opinions are our own.

Review of Further Hotel, Bali

The eco-conscious design by acclaimed architecture firm MORQ demonstrates a delicate balance that I deeply appreciated: modern minimalism seamlessly intertwined with traditional Balinese materials such as handmade bricks and locally sourced wood. With only 10 suites spread across multiple buildings, the hotel feels both intimate and spacious. I was particularly impressed by how natural ventilation and skylights were used thoughtfully to reduce the ecological footprint, a clear example that sustainability and luxury can coexist beautifully.

The room

Wandering through textured outdoor corridors, which at first felt like a labyrinth I might never escape, I was instantly distracted once the door to my Deluxe King Suite swung open. The sunken king-size bed beckoned me to sink in and unwind, promising a peaceful night’s sleep. The Moroccan shag rug underfoot and carefully curated artwork gave the space an elegant yet personal touch, revealing how much the hotel values design as part of the guest experience.

What stood out most was the seamless indoor-outdoor connection: an outdoor corridor wrapped around the suite, leading to two showers shielded by perforated handmade bricks. The sunlight filtering through cast a warm glow, while still ensuring privacy, although I sensed the street noise might be a consideration, so I would recommend requesting a quieter room. The convenience of lighting and sound controls from the bedside completed the modern comforts of this tactile, artful space.

The rooftop oasis

My visits to the rooftop at different times of day revealed how much the shifting light changes the mood here. It felt cinematic, like stepping into a Wes Anderson scene, with the aqua blue of the pool contrasting beautifully against the terracotta walls, and sunbeds neatly lined on either side. It was an ideal setting for a breakfast of fresh avocado toast and overnight oats.

Lunch, served at Portion, was a sensory exploration of local flavours. I wholeheartedly enjoyed the Woku fish, a spiced Sulawesi dish brimming with basil and lime freshness, and a crisp Halloumi salad that felt like the perfect balance to the heat. Sitting there enveloped by blue sky, greenery, and warm sun, it felt like an oasis, a calm retreat from Bali’s vibrant energy.

Friends of Further

Review of Further Hotel, Bali St Ali coffee exterior

The hotel’s commitment to community extends beyond its walls. A visit to ST ALi, the Melbourne-born specialty coffee maker housed in one of Further’s buildings nearby, provided an exceptional caffeine experience. While I did not sample Bar Vera myself, the bar opposite the hotel lobby is known for its expertly crafted cocktails and lively atmosphere, frequented by locals and expatriates alike.

Wellness is seamlessly integrated through Further’s partnership with Wrong Gym. The hotel chauffeur’s go-cart service grants effortless access to a state-of-the-art open gym, dedicated martial arts and high-intensity training spaces, and rooftop yoga sessions. Following strenuous activity, the recovery area, with a sauna, ice baths, steam room, Jacuzzi, and a pool nestled within the jungle, offered an ideal counterbalance, rejuvenating body and mind for the day ahead.

Final thoughts

From the textured corridors to the intimate suites, rooftop sanctuary, and community partnerships, every detail felt carefully curated with heart and intention. For creatives, design enthusiasts, or anyone seeking a boutique hotel where nature, culture, and comfort flow effortlessly, Further delivers an intimate and deeply satisfying stay. For me, thoughts of a return to Pererenan are already stirring.
