Rising above the waterfront in the city’s modern commercial district, Hilton Baku Hotel is one of the Azerbaijani capital’s most recognisable contemporary hotels. It was my first time in the country, and I was pleased to be just steps from the shores of the Caspian Sea, whilst also within walking distance of the city centre. I checked into the hotel for a few days to uncover the contrasts of the city.

Mixing business with exploration
As expected from a flagship Hilton property, this hotel caters strongly to business travellers with a full suite of meeting rooms, conference spaces and executive facilities designed for corporate events and international visitors. Fast Wi-Fi, well-equipped workspaces and executive lounge access make it easy to stay productive while travelling, yet the hotel’s central position also makes it an ideal base for exploring the city. Major sights and cultural landmarks are all very, very nearby.
Rooms and suites
The rooms and suites at Hilton Baku Hotel follow a modern, understated design that emphasises comfort and clean lines. That certainly was the case in my King guest room. Warm earth tones and natural light from the floor-to-ceiling windows created a calm space above the busy streets below, and I especially enjoyed views across the Caspian shoreline and the iconic Flame Towers, a dazzling show at night when the multi-coloured lights come on.
In the room, I had a spacious work desk, a large smart TV with YouTube installed, a minibar and a Lavazza blue coffee machine, my favourite coffee brand as it’s what I drink at home. The bathroom was also well-appointed. This one had a light marble finish, with a large walk-in shower and a soaking tub. Toiletries came from Crabtree & Evelyn and were stocked in sustainable bottles. If you’re travelling alone, the nice thing is that next to the bath are slide-open windows, but if you’re in company, the fact that they slide from the bedroom means privacy may be compromised.

My guest room was functional, calm space away from the noise below.
Food and drink
Dining here covers both international flavours and regional influences. The main restaurant, Cilantro, serves an extensive breakfast spread, which we really enjoyed, particularly the omelette selection and the unusual nut spreads. Meanwhile, the Sky Grill restaurant on the 24th floor is the wine and dine situation, serving the must-try when in the region: Caspian caviar. A range of other local and international dishes were also available, of which I highly recommend the lamb broth Dushbara, a comforting soup dish with tasty little dumplings.
The real highlight, of course, is the hotel’s revolving rooftop bar on floor 25, where all your drinks come with an incredible view. Perched high above the city, the slowly rotating space reveals 360-degree panoramas stretching from the Caspian coastline to Baku’s futuristic skyline. Cocktails, spirits and a large wine list make it a lively evening spot for both hotel guests and locals looking to enjoy the scenery as the city lights come on.

The Sky Grill restaurant is a superb place to wine and dine.
Wellness
The hotel’s wellness centre includes a well-equipped gym, 18-metre indoor pool and spa facilities. After a day of meetings or sightseeing, massages and restorative treatments in one of five private rooms are particularly popular. I managed to wind down with a classic massage after a long flight, which definitely prepared me for adventure. Afterwards, spa guests can enjoy a cup of herbal tea poolside and take in, once more, those incredible views, since this spa is perched on level 23, just one floor below the restaurant.

Hot stone massages are available from the hotel’s spa on floor 23.
Things to do
The hotel sits within easy reach of many of the city’s most famous attractions. Guests can stroll along the waterfront promenade, explore the atmospheric streets of Icherisheher (the UNESCO-listed historic centre) or admire the futuristic architecture of the Flame Towers rising above the city. Museums, cafés and shopping centres are all nearby.
Getting there
There are now some direct flights to Azerbaijan connecting London to Baku. Arrivals land at Heydar Aliyev International Airport, around a 30-minute drive from the hotel, depending on traffic. Taxis and private transfers are available, while some visitors opt for a pre-arranged car service to reach the Hilton quickly and comfortably.

The views from the Sky Grill are impressive.
