Ever heard of Nai Yang Beach? I hadn’t either, until I checked into the Phuket Marriott Resort and Spa. Tucked away on the tranquil northwest coast, this five-star beachfront property sits on sleepy, peaceful Nai Yang, which is a mere ten-minute drive from Phuket International Airport. But make no mistake: this is no airport hotel. That proximity simply means you’ve no excuse to miss your flight, while still getting a taste of Phuket that feels wonderfully untouched and natural, far from the hustle of the island’s busier tourist hubs.
While this stay was complimentary, all thoughts and opinions are our own.

Pool access is overrated (yes, I said it)

I preferred the room that offered a pool view instead of pool access
The resort offers 180 guest rooms, suites and premium beachfront pool villas, many with direct beach access and private plunge pools. The design elegantly blends traditional Southern Thai culture with contemporary tropical modernism, featuring low-rise buildings seamlessly integrated into the surrounding flora of Sirinat National Park.
These structures frame a sprawling, winding lagoon pool that loops through the property, serving as its visual centrepiece. Inside the rooms and the striking open-air lobby, you’ll find modern luxury with subtle, historic touches like dark wood finishes and woven Thai textiles.
I first checked into a ground-level pool access room, widely considered the resort’s most popular type. It lets you slide straight into the water from your private terrace. But personally? Not for me. Two kids swimming past my door was enough to make me grab my bags and go. The room was lovely, but call me a diva: I prefer to be higher up, with views and more privacy.
Give me height, not a pool

Premium Pool View Room
And that’s exactly what I got when I switched to the decadent premium pool view room on the third floor: scenic views of the lagoon pool and rolling green hills from a spacious private balcony. Maybe it’s just personal preference, but this stay cemented the fact that I love being above, looking down – and that views beat direct access, even if it technically means a downgrade. The room was deeply peaceful and private, perfect for undisturbed naps, work sessions, and one of the most restful sleeps I could have asked for.
It gets even better. For big spenders, the fifteen private beachfront pool villas sit directly on the sand, which is a rare feature in Phuket, where true “on-the-beach” lodging is highly restricted. Each villa has its own back lawn that ends right on the sand, complete with a private beach gate.
The beach that does a disappearing act

Beautiful Nai Yang Beach
The beach here deserves its own spotlight – not just because it shares the resort’s name, but because it’s unlike anything I’ve experienced in Phuket. The stretch directly in front of the resort is beautiful, but it experiences drastically low tides, making the water very shallow for swimming during parts of the day. It’s great for beachcombing, though. Better swimming conditions can be found a short walk down the shore. At high tide, the water rises back right up to the resort wall, which is ideal for the hotel’s complimentary kayaking and paddleboarding. It’s a dramatic shift, and worth planning around.
Local life (and planes) just a stroll away

There’s plenty to explore nearby, or just stay in and soak up the hotel
Just a ten-minute walk north along the sand brings you to the livelier main section of Nai Yang Beach, which stays deep enough for swimming all day and is lined with local street food vendors and massage huts. So even though you may feel secluded, you’re not giving up on local Thai life at all.
And it’s super close to that viral “plane spotting” beach, too. The famous videos of commercial jets roaring just feet over tourists’ heads are filmed at Mai Khao Beach, immediately north of the airport. From the hotel, you can already see those dramatic landings. But to reach the actual viewing point, you need to walk about 1.5 kilometres north along the shoreline, cutting right past the airport fence through Sirinat National Park. It will be quite an adventure, complete with some truly hair-raising photos.
No reason to leave (but you can if you want)

Big Fish Bar
The hotel property is rather secluded, down a winding jungle road that could be an attraction in itself. Once on site, you feel a million miles from society, hidden somewhere between lush green hills and the ocean. Fortunately, the resort offers multiple restaurants and bars for those days when you can’t be bothered to go anywhere.
Dining options include The Andaman Kitchen, an international buffet, and the beachfront Big Fish Restaurant & Bar, renowned for its seafood and grilled specialities.
The hotel also features the award-winning Quan Spa, a full-service luxury spa offering traditional Thai massages, couples packages, body scrubs, facials, and a steam room. Plus, there is a lively kids’ club with daily organised crafts and complimentary water sports like kayaking during high tide to keep the little ones occupied while you soak in the sun and serenity.
What Marriott is building next
Just down the road, PEYLAA Phuket, Autograph Collection Residences is Marriott’s new luxury-branded residential development in the Cherngtalay area, which I got to tour for a first glimpse. It happens to be the very first Autograph Collection residential project in the Asia-Pacific region: low-density luxury living with a “modern tropical” exterior and “coastal chic” fully furnished interiors.
Fully managed by Marriott’s hotel team with completion due by late 2027, lucky PEYLAA residents will receive all the hotel’s five-star hospitality standards and perks, including Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status.
