If you’re looking for a heritage hotel in Singapore that couples a storied past with luxe vibes, then your hunt is over. Located in a quiet enclave on Sentosa Island, The Barracks Hotel Sentosa by Far East Hospitality is a design-forward escape that blends elegant modernity with old-world charm. Though it opened in December 2019, Singapore’s pandemic-enforced “circuit-breakers” meant the hotel (like all in the region) had a tough first year. But when I visited, just before Christmas 2021, reservations were hard to come by – yet the property retained its tranquillity. We’d like to mention here that while this stay was gifted by the hotel, all the thoughts and opinions are our own.

While this stay was complimentary, all thoughts and opinions are our own.

Review of The Barracks Hotel Sentosa by Far East Hospitality

It has got to be said that the arrival experience at the hotel is quite unique—guests pull up at an underground parking lot and have to figure out how to make their way to the lobby. But what you’ll find upstairs is an incredibly rare treat.

A military past

The lobby sets the scene at the hotel

History is everywhere on Sentosa, and The Barracks certainly plays into the island’s military heritage. In fact, the hotel is housed in a heritage building that was once a military barracks and artillery store. Army-inspired touches are everywhere, from the memorabilia and photographs on display to the suite names and smart furnishings.

The Barracks takes its commitment to the military theme further by offering historic tours with two former soldiers—Mr Khor and Mr Winston—who were stationed here in the 1960s.

I take a tour with the two ex-soldiers who offer an engaging deep-dive into the history of Sentosa and the hotel site, punctuated with lively stories, images, and maps that bring the reality of the area’s past to life. But, it’s when Mr Winston mentions the site’s use in the Second World War that my ears perk up. Apparently, Indian officers serving in the British Army in the 1940s were stationed here, and after a little discussion, we realised that my maternal grandfather—who came to Singapore with the British Army—had probably been billeted here.

The room

Get comfy in a room filled with unique furnishings

There are just 40 rooms at The Barracks Hotel, all set across a smartly rendered duplex configuration. Those on the ground floor come with a patio and direct pool access, while those on the first floor get a little balcony overlooking the pools.

I check into a Premier Room for my stay. At 39-sqm with somewhat oversized furnishings—including a massive king-sized bed in white sheets tucked so tight they’d pass a quarter-bounce test—it’s a little cosy. But it’s also beautifully appointed with gorgeous furnishings.

There’s a minibar disguised as a smart army trunk, a deep-soak tub, a 55-inch TV I can connect to my iPad, and Atkinsons-branded bathroom amenities. But my favourite piece in the room is the vintage-style writing desk that looks like it should’ve been in an officer’s quarters. All that’s missing is some stationery, but more on that later.

The extras

The Barracks Hotel Sentosa is the perfect place to enjoy a getaway for both locals and tourists

The social hub of The Barracks Hotel is the Living Room, a light-filled space located between the two pools. The lounge is more elegant than any mess hall, and I’d hazard a guess that the food is better, too. Breakfasts start with fruit, bread, and a choice of drinks, before guests select from a series of Western or local mains: the Nasi Lemak was a delight. The evening canapés—free-flow drinks with a daily selection of snacks—is the perfect way to wind down from your day, especially if you can nab an alfresco table.

Unfortunately, the Living Room doesn’t serve lunch or dinner, but no matter. Guests can quick-march across the yard to the Mess Hall, which houses French, Japanese, and Indian restaurants. The hotel helps us snag a coveted table at Quentin’s, so we’re able to enjoy a heartening dinner of chef Quentin Pereira’s famous Eurasian dishes.

General Manager Sohrab Thareja deserves a special mention for going out of his way to engage with guests and encourage his team to deliver outstanding experiences. When I ask him about the lack of stationery in the rooms—I’m the type that still writes letters when I travel—he comes back with a box full of Barracks letterhead and postcards, as well as a quill with ink and a wax seal. Later, he texts Quentin’s chef to ensure we’re taken care of for dinner.

There’s no doubt that The Barracks is a beautifully conceived hotel, and if you’re looking to kick back and relax in total tranquillity, you won’t do better in Singapore.
