Bangkok has no shortage of luxury riverside hotels, but few create such a convincing sense of escape as Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River. Designed by Jean-Michel Gathy, the low-rise property replaces the traditional high-rise hotel with courtyards, tropical gardens and reflective waterways, creating an atmosphere that feels far removed from the city beyond. When we visited, we discovered that art, nature, and water are celebrated throughout the hotel, reinforcing the sense that this is closer to an urban retreat than a traditional city stay.
While this stay was hosted, all thoughts and opinions are our own.

Location

Overlooking the Chao Phraya with sweeping views across Bangkok’s riverside skyline
Situated on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, the Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok feels refreshingly removed from the intensity of central Bangkok, while remaining well-connected to the city. A complimentary shuttle boat operates every 30 minutes throughout the day, taking guests to ICONSIAM, where connections to the BTS make exploring Bangkok simple.
Charoenkrung, one of Bangkok’s oldest districts, is also within easy reach and now home to an increasingly vibrant collection of independent galleries, cafés, and creative spaces, making it an excellent base for guests looking to experience a different side of the city.
Arrival

A calm welcome framed by water and tropical greenery
The hotel makes an immediate impression. Shimmering black reflecting pools, tropical planting, and beautifully landscaped gardens sit alongside towering orchid arrangements, elegant hanging lights, and subtle Thai details. The sheer volume of contemporary artwork made the lobby feel more like an art gallery than a traditional reception.
I arrived during an exceptionally busy check-in period, yet the welcome remained attentive and efficient, with chilled coconut water and refreshing cold towels quickly offered. Despite the activity around the reception, the water features and open design stop the space from feeling hectic. I later learned that Jean-Michel Gathy used water throughout the property to bring the energy and movement of the Chao Phraya River into the hotel itself.
Rooms

A thoughtful in-room welcome
The guestrooms continue the same calm, contemporary design. My Premier River-View Room felt polished and beautifully considered, with generous proportions, clean lines and a soft neutral palette. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered expansive views of the Chao Phraya, with boats passing gently along the river below.
The room flowed naturally between areas for sleeping, relaxing and working, while the spacious marble bathroom centred around a striking egg-shaped bathtub. Another detail I appreciated was the lighting; with sleek, white control panels that were intuitive and easy to use, it avoided the overly complex systems now found in many newer luxury hotels.

A heavenly bathroom with a deep soaking tub
Thoughtful touches included a personalised linen cloth embroidered with my initials, local fruit on arrival and the hotel’s bottled Chao Phraya Barista Brew, made using tea sourced from northern Thailand. Fresh ice was also kept replenished in the room, making it easy to enjoy this delicate tea in your own time.
Dining and drinks

The striking dining room at Yu Ting Yuan
Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok has one of the strongest restaurant and bar collections in the city, with each venue offering a very different experience. Yu Ting Yuan, the Michelin-recognised Cantonese restaurant that became the first in Thailand to earn a star, overlooks the dramatic central water garden, while Brasserie Palmier brings a relaxed French brasserie feel to the riverfront. Riva del Fiume Ristorante channels the atmosphere of an Italian lakeside restaurant and is also home to the hotel’s excellent breakfast.

Speaking of which, breakfast combines an extensive buffet with an à la carte menu that changes daily. Alongside freshly baked pastries, tropical fruit, Thai specialities and locally produced cheeses, more unusual options included lychee wood-smoked salmon and a daily-changing breakfast pizza topped with an egg. Small touches, such as a freshly prepared coffee mousse or homemade lemonade served tableside, made it feel far more personal than the usual hotel buffet.

Inside Bangkok’s acclaimed BKK Social Club
Elsewhere, The Lounge serves Thai coffee, afternoon tea and light meals, while Café Madeleine specialises in freshly baked pastries and cakes. BKK Social Club, with its Mexico City-inspired menu and serious approach to cocktails, remains one of Bangkok’s most striking cocktail bars, with awards to match.
Urban Wellness Centre

The serene spa reception
The Urban Wellness Centre goes well beyond a traditional hotel spa, combining treatments, fitness and recovery within a 2,500 sqm space. While I did not have a treatment, the facilities themselves were among the most comprehensive I have seen in a city hotel.
Beyond the treatment rooms, some of which have their own private herbal steam rooms and baths, there are steam rooms, a Jacuzzi and relaxation areas with herbal teas and healthy snacks. More unusual is the dedicated physiotherapy and recovery room, equipped with specialist technology including laser and ultrasound equipment for rehabilitation, muscle recovery and post-flight treatments.

Poolside calm in the heart of Bangkok
The wellness offering extends into a boutique with resort wear, beauty and wellness products, including the Four Seasons x Jim Thompson Thai Explorers collection and Thai brand SUDTANA. For more active guests, there is a spacious fitness centre, movement studios and a Muay Thai ring beside the 35-metre lap pool. Closer to the river, two more relaxed swimming pools overlook the view, framed by mature trees that provide welcome shaded areas while preserving the fantastic views.
Service
Service remained consistently impressive throughout my stay. Despite the hotel operating at high occupancy, staff were attentive without feeling overbearing, remembering preferences and making sure everything ran smoothly.
It was often the smaller details that stood out most. Fresh ice was replenished throughout the day, while evening turndown included the hotel’s Nibble & Snooze amenity one evening, with roasted nuts from southern Thailand, practical sleep tips, and a QR code linking to the Four Seasons Spotify sleep playlist. Alongside the linen cloth embroidered with my initials in the bathroom and the thoughtful room amenities, these touches added a very personal layer to the stay.

The verdict

A stay that makes departure come far too soon
Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River is an utterly luxurious oasis hidden in the middle of the capital. Despite its location, there is a remarkable sense of separation from the pace of Bangkok beyond its walls, helped by the water-filled design, landscaped gardens and impeccable public spaces.
What really sets it apart, though, is the consistency of the experience. The rooms are beautifully finished, the dining and bar collection is exceptional, the wellness facilities are unusually extensive, and service remains attentive throughout. Add the level of attention to detail that appears in everything from the room amenities to evening turndown, and the result is one of the city’s most polished luxury stays.
